It all started out because @jared9999 first said that according to level, Conmebol is : 1. Brazil and Argentina 2. Mexico 3. the rest of Conmebol. Which is highly insulting to most Conmebol fans. Where, first of all, Mexico isn't part of Conmebol, and secondly, compared to everybody else in Conmebol, Mexico is at most about the same thing than every body else, (or even among the worst of it), as they still haven't won much things, while competing there. And most of the few times, whenever some of their clubs has achieved a good performance, they do it by having a very strong Conmebol base of players in their team (with very few home players), almost without any mexican identity. Compared to that, Conmebol clubs mostly have achieved their own success, based on home players with very few foreign players in the rosters (at most with 3-4 of them), so they are lots more representative of the nation they are representing.
They need to build this thing like cup tournaments or March Madness, then maybe MLS will have a chance. Everyone can beat everyone in one game. 32 or 64 teams, one game rounds. Game location is decided by bribes. It would get rid of the CCL group stage, less schedule congestion. Plus CCL group stage is terrible anyway. And it might be a more interesting tournament because anything can happen in one game.
I am just going to leave this here. Pretty good from our 2nd tier teams . MLS has proven to not be able to handle tier one LigaMX clubs Why not give these losers tier 2 clubs and give the Libertadores the best we can offer. I'm sure one of the big LigaMX clubs can buy themselves a title
Doesn't look like 2016 will be the year for MLS either. The Galaxy result really put the league in a difficult spot with four MLS-Liga MX series in the quarterfinals. I have been calling out Liga MX for not getting all teams to the quarterfinals since the format changed to groups of three. Now that has been achieved (although with quite a bit of luck for Queretaro) nothing will reaffirm Mexico's grip over CONCACAF more than a clear sweep next spring.
I think this is a real dream for CONCACAF, to have 4 Liga MX clubs and 4 MLS clubs in Quarterfinals Now, we can remind about North American SuperLiga with 8 teams, only US+MX.... and with 1 vs 1 matches, where we can see exactly which is the difference between MX clubs and MLS clubs now, MLS clubs must play their best 11, in the best edition of CCL ever (probably).... not with second or third team, not with young players which never played a continental match. Must play with the best 11 against the biggest rivals of USA in football (soccer). For me, normal in 2015/16 the final will be played between Tigres and America DC United can play the semifinals, and between Santos/LAG will be a hard double for 2 matches in semifinals against curently champions, America !!
I said this before the group stage even started. Simply by all the big names that are in this edition. The top 4 all time scorers ever; Chuleta, Peralta, Darwin, Emanuel Villa. Plus all the other great names Gignac, Stevie G, Gio, and even that pecho frio Dempsey .
Two decades? More like three!!! ROFL Loved the faces of the European Galaxy players when they realized what level of play they signed up for in MLS after the Santos drubbing. And I don't want to ever see Gio on El Tri again as long as he plays in that league!
Hey, we were semifinalists at the 2010 World Cup, won the 2011 Copa América, and semifinalists at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.
If MLS keeps expanding, their players will be ever more dilluted among the dozens of teams. To beat mexicans regularly, they would need to become a two-tier competition or abolish salary caps, which won't happen.
Deportivo Saprissa won in 2005. It's 10 or 11, depending on if you count the current Champions League, which will be won by a Mexican club.
That was a great win by Saprissa. They beat both Monterrey and Pumas with full starters! Hugo Sanchez even bragged about how the trophy was pretty much in the bag in the final before the 1st leg!
2005 was the first time I watched a CONCACAF Champions Cup, Club World Cup, or Gold Cup. To show how far attendance has come, Wikipedia says Kansas City got only 1,207 fans to see their 2005 Quarterfinal first leg against Deportivo Saprissa.
Was 2005 the year it returned to the Fox network? Before that it was tough to watch in the US with usually only the final on television. In the MLS era I remember watching the 1997 and 2000 final on Univision. 1997: Univision 1998: Univision 1999: Fox Sports World? (unavailable for many) - this was the Las Vegas one 2000: Univision Don't think the 2001 Giants Cup was on TV and the same might be true for the 2002-2004 Champions Cup editions. Anybody remember? And today I can watch all the knock-out rounds live in the UAE on Abu Dhabi Sports.
So four editions left to prevent this (unwanted) milestone. The line-up next year is: FC Dallas (USSF) Portland Timbers (USSF) Red Bull New York (USSF) Sporting Kansas City (USSF) Vancouver Whitecaps (CSA) Not convinced next year will be much different. Dallas was the first USSF team to win in Mexico but has achieved nothing else of note. New York has been plain embarrassing in CONCACAF play and Portland didn't leave a mark in their only participation. Neither did Vancouver. The only team with some continental history is Kansas City. They were the first USSF team to beat Mexican opposition over two legs (2002) and made the quarterfinals as recently as 2014.
You should specify Fox Soccer Channel, not Fox, which is a broadcast channel. I joined BigSoccer in 2004, and in 2004 I don't think I knew the CONCACAF Champions Cup existed, so I don't know about TV for it.
I remember it was you Swiss that posted the article about Hugo saying that he saw himself celebrating at the end before the 2005 CCC final. Remember?
