The last couple of voters added a few new players.
Here's the current version by first nation played for (with total points for each nation) listed by the decade of players' debuts - Hungary and Czechoslovakia could arguably have been given half of Kubala and Bican's points respectively. Yugoslavia, Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia would have a few extra players and points if counting the new contries within their totals but likewise Serbia would have Dzajic, Russia would have Yashin etc if current countries were given the players that were born in them but which were part of the larger nations during their careers. All Germans including Sammer are listed under Germany. I'm still listing Suker as Croatian, with so many goals and caps for Croatia compared to for Yugoslavia.

    Hi,

I know I'm not strictly on-topic but I listed my all-time greatest players on this web-page, and the best 20 national sides and best 20 club sides of all time, with their line-ups. It would be good to know what you think.

    Hi,
I'm wary of links after clicking a virus previously (hopefully AVG would now prevent them but anyway...). You can paste your article on here by all means, and if you have less than 50 players you could add a few and be included as a voter for this thread. Perhaps you could create a new thread for the all-time sides and I'm sure plenty of people would be interested.

Thanks for the legends list GeorgieBest. As you can see they all feature in the current standings with the majority in the top 20, including your namesake ;). 18 of them (all but the two oldest) were in the Daily Mail's original list.

The 10 greatest 'poachers' of all time

The 'poacher' or 'fox in the box' is usually a scorer of a great many goals but not a scorer of great goals. Almost all goals are scored from within, or on the edge of, the penalty box and result from approach play or saved shots from other players. The poacher seizes on loose balls in and around the box and puts them away. This is not as easy as it sounds. The great goal poacher instinctively knows when and where to be, he has fast reactions, and he can lose his marker and can score with great improvisation: with either foot, the head or even other body parts. He can turn tightly in space and score from acute and unusual angles. These players often offer nothing else to gameplay outside the box but can register amazing goal tallies. They always need to be combined with other talented second strikers or centre-forwards and tend to work best when combined with the former. To qualify for this list they have to be something special and have extraordinary goal tallies.

    Leonidas Bra 1930s

    Jimmy Greaves Eng 1960s

    Denis Law Sco 1962-74

    Uwe Seeler Ger 1966-70

    Gerd Muller Ger 1970s

    Ian Rush Eng 1980s

    Butragueno Spa 1980s

    Hugo Sanchez Mex 1980s

    Romario Bra 1988-94

    van Nistletrooy Neths 1998-2008

    ---------------------

1:poachers dont score great goals??let me know what a great goal is..your criteria of a great goal...

2: ALLMOST all goals are scored from within or the edge of the penalty box, AND RESULT OF THE APROACH PLAY OR SAVED SHOTS FROM OTHER PLAYERS...really so dramatic??

3:the players often offer nothing else for the game play outside of the penalty box..(not in the box this players leave the field drinking water and walk around on the field???)..
    ----------
complete strikers are the kings of strikers..the suggestion i got after reading your description of this typ of players..

    -----

    example van basten..

here is videofootage of van bastens best goalscoring season for ac milan 1991/92..25 leaque goals scored(imclusive 9 penaltys,5 headers)..1: please let me know the quality of his goals .how many of his goals was great goals..remember the argumentation complete strikers score often great goals and complete strikers selfcreate often goals...

(van basten olso has scored 4 goals in italien cup (inclusive 3 penaltys)and 6 goals in european cup (inclusive 1 penalty and 1 bycicle goal) same season..)

in my opinion the quality of van bastens goals very often is not better than goals of called poachers..see the videofootage ...

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93kib4fjrYc&feature=related"]YouTube - Marco Van Basten 91-92[/ame]

van basten has scored total 122 goals for milan and 33 of his goals he has scored with penaltys...for the statistic..

Since 621380 has read your page I was now confident to do so (I was extra cautious after getting a virus from a supposed blog though admitedly the post and probably the web page address looked more dodgy on that occasion).
Excellent work - it's an interesting read that I'd recommend to others to have a look - the Great Teams (national sides and club sides) section is particularly nice. I'm sure the great players lists can be compared to the votes on this thread and also comme's lists of Greatest X (X being the particular position/role though he has less than you in midfield and attack) of All-Time.

Just to re-assure you a little 621380, on the vote for greatest striker the 6 suggestions he gives include two of the 'poachers' Muller and Romario, along with Henry and 3 he classifies as complete strikers Ronaldo, Eusebio and van Basten, so he's not saying every 'complete' striker is ahead of all the 'poachers'. There are a few other van Basten videos available on Youtube of course, and several great individual goals are evident on them.

georgiebest more or lesser suggest poachers doesent score great goals....videos of poachers where did score great goals are avalaible on youtube too...so why you dont point out this fact and disagree with him??watch highlights of hugo sanchez and others
    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQscA62WztU"]YouTube - Hugo Sanchez Top Ten[/ame]

..there is not much footage of seeler..however there are videos on youtube where he did score at least 3 great goals.

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6EjADHWEj8"]YouTube - Uwe Seeler 1960[/ame]

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPauczFdErI"]YouTube - WM 1970 Deutschland - England[/ame]

.gerd müller has scored some few great goals too and for many of his goals there exist no videofootage for the publik..this are examples....i never said van basten has not scored great goals , i have pointed out many of his goals are not better than the goals of so called poachers..and thats a fact..if you disagree let me know your reason..

the videofootage of van bastens 25 goals he has scored 1991/92 is more useful than picking out his career highlightgoals .....remember who point out the finger against so called poachers..(better description is goalscorer strikers)

here is videofootage of another ac milian season where van basten did score 19 liga goals..so you see combinated footage of nearly 50% (44 goals, inclusive 14 penaltys..)of his ac milan liga career goals..

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpFeiby7ifo"]YouTube - Marco Van Basten, Serie A goals 1992/93[/ame]

so now what do you think how many of his 44 goals can descripted great goals??...i knows its suspective..however i personally think van basten offer not really much more than others ....

    van basten:

172 games, 152 goals for ajax
201 games, 124 goals for ac milan (33 penaltys)..
58 games, 24 goals dutch NT(footage of 7 goals he has scored are available on youtube)

van basten has scored 31(32) european cup goals in 45 games. ..there is avalaible videofootage on youtube of 27 goals he has scored(combinated for ajax and ac milan...)

621380, I agree that those strikers are capable of great goals so in that respect I do disagree with part of GeorgieBest's write-up. I think he was giving a general description and trying to differenciate between the styles of different strikers though, and I do think overall it is a good website. He also does say in his description of poachers "He can turn tightly in space and score from acute and unusual angles." and "To qualify for this list they have to be something special and have extraordinary goal tallies."
Most of the players in his 'poachers' list did score a number of great goals, and each player has his own abilities so it's perhaps hard to categorise them. I do think most of them are great players very much because of their goal tallies though (maybe not Butragueno who was less prolific than the others but contributed a bit more to creating goals at times probably).
Hugo Sanchez did score a number of spectacular goals, examples of which are on the video you provided. I do think it is correct to say van Basten was more complete, both as a goalscorer and overall player though. van Basten was excellent on his left side as well as his right, he could dribble very well as well as score with acrobatic finishes (though Sanchez was perhaps the master at these), he was a very good passer and could bring others into play often (I know Muller was also good at this but van Basten had the advantage of being quick and more mobile), he had a great touch in general play and he was a great header also.
I think different strikers do have different attributes - for example Bergkamp scored more memorable goals than Lineker (who was categorised as an 'off the shoulder' striker but could've perhaps been included as a poacher), but if Bergkamp was the better overall player it was because of his passing, vision and suchlike not because he could be said to be a better goalscorer even though he scored better goals.

"Great" or "spectacular" are just relative term like "beauty is in the eye of the beholders"! For example some might think overhead kick is "great" but to me it;s just "spectacular" and NOT neccesary great - still depend on LUCK as the striker "try to do his best ... blindedly or statistically"

Great goals often like Maradona, or Ronaldo who dribbled passed few opponents and scored. Or to some lesser extend, great goals involved more with a striker's talent/skills before he can score that goal. For example, a great striker would accept a bad pass (from his back, or when he was surrounded with defenders) and YET he was still able to control, and score. While most often, a "POACHER" score goals as a result of team work - got a good pass and all he does is to finish it!

Amazing how four great games can make someone the 38th best player of all time.

Would love to see an argument justifying Rossi over let's say .. Henry.

Winning a WC almost single handedly is not enough?
Does that not compare better with Diego Maradona?
Paolo Rossi will be remembered in history, Henry not so sure...
I do not see your point.

Can't really see how Rossi's performance in '82 is comparable to Maradona in '86 but well ...

    Pro Rossi
    Peak (NT)

    Skillwise
    Header

    Pro Henry

Peak (Club) - 4 Times EPL topscorer, leading the team to EPL title, better Ballon D'or voting record by far
Longevity (NT) - Henry scored more goals for the NT than Rossi played games
Longevity (Club) - Nearly double the amount of games, more than twice as much seasons for a top club
Importance & Value (NT) - Henry played in seven big tournaments compared to Rossi's two, alot more games played, NT regular for a lot longer
Importance & Value (Club) - Henry WAS Arsenal for half a decade, Rossi hardly even the 2nd best player when he played for Juventus

    Skillwise
    Speed
    Shot
    Dribbling
    Technique
    Passing
    Crossing
    Free Kick

Goalscoring (look up Henry's GPG for Arsenal if you disagree with me; 4 times EPL top goalscorer; the others aren't even debatable)

    Not even close.

Rossi was the Golden Ball winner and Golden Shoe winner at the 82' World Cup, to add along to his World Cup winning medal. That's an absolutely amazing feat. Not exactly sure how Henry's Ballon d'Or is better than Rossi's considering he never did win it, while Rossi won it in 1982 (along with World Player of the Year), this in a time with players like Zico, Platini, Boniek, Rummenigge, and even Maradona, albeit he was quite young.
You also failed to exclude the fact that so many more games are played by NT teams now so naturally Henry would have plenty of game under his belt compared to Rossi, despite that fact, they still have equivalent goal averages for their teams. Also, Henry WAS Arsenal but let's not compare the Arsenal team of recent years to the team that Juventus was in the 80s. If I recall correctly, they made 3 consecutive European finals in the early 80s. That's something Arsenal could never dream of attaining.

The fact that he played at 7 tournaments is damn impressive, though.

It's a bit exaggerated to compare Rossi 82 to Maradona 86. To be fair Rossi's 82 was equivalent to Baggio's 94 who were KEY to lead the (defensive) team to the final. The only difference (big?) was that Rossi did score 1goal in the final and Italy won that day (while Baggio failed to kick the ball and Brazxil won)

Now back to Rossi vs Henry. It's rather hard to do a clear jsutification as both were very very good forwards. Henry delivered more to his club and Rossi delivered more to his NT. They both won big prizes i.e. WC, UCL, leauges titles ...

However, as usual, WC put more weighs (if not most) to the ballance of the two: where Rossi shone well in 82 and was also good in WC78. Henry did also well for France (6goals +1ass/ 17 WCgames) but not to the same level as Rossi performed (9goals+4ass/14 WC games including goldenboot and goldenball 82)

Henry put on some good flashy performance in EPL, but unfortunately, people tend to memorize WC level more -

--> No surprise that many would put Rossi ahead to Henry in the ranking

I have to disagree that Rossi delivered more for his NT than Henry. The Frenchman played a lot more games, scored more goals, played in more big tournaments, also won WC + Euro and another final appeareance where he played a crucial role.

Ofc It doesn't suprise me that many put Rossi ahead of Henry on a internetboard where a lot of people believe Zinedine Zidane is the best player of all time.
The only weight that justifies to put Rossi ahead of Henry is
    95% single WC performance
    5% other

Rossi did have a great world cup in 82 but Henry did achieve more for France. The only achievement Rossi has over Henry is the golden boot which gets far too overhyped and the golden ball.

    Rossi:
    - WC82 winner
    - WC82 golden boot
    - WC82 golden ball

    Henry:
    - WC98 winner
    - EC00 winner
    - EC00 team of tournament
    - CC03 winner
    - CC03 golden boot
    - CC03 golden ball
    - WC06 runner up
    - WC06 team of tournament
    - France top scorer (51)
    - France top assist maker (29)

In competitive matches Henry also wins.

Rossi: 11/22, scoring in 7 of those matches 31.81%
Henry: 35/62, scoring in 29 of those matches 47.77%

The real difference is their club career:
    Rossi:
    - 2 Serie A, 1 Serie B (3 Leagues)
    - 1 Coppa Italia
    - 1 Champions League
    - 1 Champions League runner up
    - League goals 103/251
    - Champions League goals 11
    - 1 Serie A golden boot
    - 1 Champions League golden boot
    - Total club trophies 5

    Henry:
    - 1 Ligue1, 2 EPL, 2 La Liga (5 Leagues)
    - 2 F.A. Cups, 1 Coppa Del Rey (3 Cups)
    - 1 Champions League
    - 1 Champions League runner up
    - 1 UEFA cup runner up
    - League goals 234/467 (he was much more prolific when he was a striker at Arsenal with 174/254)
    - Champions League goals 50
    - 4 EPL golden boots
    - 2 soulier d'ors
    - Total club trophies 9

I think the above is the point.
