    Re: Zak Whitbread to Rangers...

I am sure they are aware of Whitbread, they just can't call in 50 people. So some guys don't get a call. There are as you know only 11 spots on the field, and apparently Bob thought that there were other people more worthy.

Bob probably has watched more of Whtibread in action this last season than anyone here, so I will trust his judgement.

Do we really want a guy on our team who plays for Millwall?

I've seen more Millwall this year than Bob or anyone here

I'm a little disappointed that Whitbread didn't get called in, I would have called Zak in over Califf personally. But as has been mentioned, he's still a CB playing in the English 3rd Division. It's hard to get all worked up over this omission.
Again, I would have called him in over Califf to the 30 man squad, but it's hard to drop one of those other guys for Zak.

balerion, i've gotta go with arswift. i mean, that post convinces because it has the characteristic bs ring to it of a poster who has thought things through and knows what it's all about.

Exactly. I think if Bob doesn't trust Califf, Pearce, or Mastroeni in any meaningful games right now, then they shouldn't waste roster space from one of the younger guys.

Orozco, Parkhurst, and Marshall are all due. Goodson is also playing in a lesser league and Lichaj hasn't gotten true league experience yet, but his position is intriguing. Really Califf is the only one I could ask for being taken off in favor off Zac, and then maybe Goodson since his league is in season anyway.

    Re: Zak Whitbread to Rangers...

To be fair, let's remember a few things.

    1. From all accounts, Goodson is having a terrific year in Norway. I haven't seen him play so I can't personally attest to this.

    2. Lichaj is a RB and regardless of your thoughts on the merits of his callup, he's not competing with Whitbread or any other centerback.

    3. Bradley generally doesn't like to go with an all-newbie roster or lineup. Even the Copa America roster was anchored by Kasey Keller and it was basically the swan song for fading vets like Twellman, Olsen, and Conrad. In this light, it's not surprising that Bradley would go with an experienced hand like Califf over the #9 CB on the depth chart. After all, the #9 CB on the depth chart doesn't have much of a chance anyway and I think Bob prefers to have a little continuity.

    4. We have a 30-man roster and it's unclear what direction Bob is going to take to trim it down. Is he going to get rid of the fringiest guys or is he going to drop a lot of the CC guys? I really don't know what to expect.

You would think that now the US has advanced to the semis and even with a loss they'll have the third place game on Sunday (?) it will only leave him two days until the start of the Gold Cup. Therefore, alot of the CC guys will be dropped outside of guys like Adu, Torres, Robles, and Pierce who haven't played at all. Just my guess.

I am guessing Robles is going to join Kaiserslautern in training camp.

Our first Gold Cup match is on July 4th, we have 6 days between the final and that match.

I don't understand Zak's thinking here. Is he really that loyal to Millwall, that he'd turn down a chance to play in a higher flight against better competition, and turn down a shot at the USMNT?

Doesn't sound like there was any thinking-- he's denying that there is/will be any deal for him. He also said he wasn't called in for the USA, not that he turned it down.

    Re: Zak Whitbread to Rangers...

Comments from Zak's agent regarding the potential move:

"The club know he wants to play in the Championship. He is very disappointed that is not possible with Millwall this season after May's defeat in the play-offs - because that was what he really wanted.
"He thinks he is more than capable of playing at a higher level. "If the club wants to put him on the transfer list, that is their prerogative."

    ___________
"There has been nothing definite yet about Zak that I can go into detail on."

Well, at least there is still a chance that Zak will be playing above League One next season.

It looks promising, but we all know that you can't trust British football sites for cut and dry stuff.

The rumblings about a move to Nottingham Forest are from a reliable set of sources, but at the moment I don't think it's gone much beyond declaring an interest and at a push trying to negotiate a fee.
