Yuri Tishkov, a former Torpedo and Dinamo player, was found dead near his house in Moscow last weekend, stabbed more than 30 times by unknown assailants.
Tishkov was a young star with Dinamo Moscow when a horrible injury suffered in a Cup match in 1993 curtailed his career. After breaking both of his legs in a nightmarish collision with an opposing player, Tishkov never fully recoverred and was done with football by 1997, after a spell with Rubin Kazan. He went on to much success as a TV commentator and a businessman, founding an agent firm for Russian footballers.
His clients include CSKA's Smirnov (Tishkov has recently engineered his switch from Torpedo-ZIL) and, reportedly, Zenit's Kerzhakov. The speculation is that his agent business was the reason for murder. The killer or killers weren't interested in robbing him, having left his briefcase with a sizeable sum in chash on the scene of the crime.
Managing footballer transfers and contracts in Russia is often a dirty business, with many a criminal syndicate involved. It is hard to imagine that Tishkov was mixeing with hoodlums, but he may have, in his dealings, crossed some wrong people.
In any occasion, his death will be mourned by all who knew and admired him. The girefstroken Kansas City Wizards' forward Igor Simutenkov, formerly of Dinamo, left the training camp and flew to Moscow for the funeral immediately upon receiving the news.
