The Christmas present I got my brother this year was based on a shared memory of a jingle in a commercial from the mid-70s. And since there's no rules, I am skipping to the I spot now. It's an Ice Bird.
Peter Revson - the pitchman in these - was killed in a crash in early 1974. This ad campaign had to be active when that happened.
Since I screwed up the order, I will go back to B with one that sticks in my head 40 years later: Bon Jour (Action) Jeans
May I just say I need the simplicity of the early-1970s Coca Cola commercial on this most terrible of days.
Easy-Bake oven, 1963 sisters of my friends had them. We'd use them when no one was looking. In retrospect, it's hard to imagine leaving 7 year old boys alone in a house, but things were better in those days...
F is for Fruit of the Loom underwear: In third grade or so, my Mom made my brother an amazing Halloween costume out of balloons and papier mache of some sort and he went as the purple grape guy. Couldn't have been much after that else he would never have gone for it.
J for Johnny Seven OMA (One Man Army) Toy Gun I never had one, and I don't recall anybody in the neighborhood having one. They must have been expensive.
K is for K-Tel whose commercials were common since the company produced so many of them over so many years. I had a K-Tel album at some point in 74-75-76 but I can't match my memory to the list of albums on Wikipedia.
It's crazy the mix of music on that LP. I think I bought a couple of those in my day; if it had two or three songs I liked but didn't really care to buy the album, this was perfect..... ....and for $5.99!?! I'm in, bro!
L is for Legend Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle commercial BTW, this scale bike and action figure have been re-released by a new company, and these reissues are exactly like the originals, I'm told by FB enthusiasts.
The first album I ever selected and bought with my own money Do It Again, Day By Day, Uneasy Rider, Ain't No Sunshine, Use Me, Brother Louie, Never Rains in California...
M is for Mr Potato Head I had one. I could use the potato a day or two, then I had to give it back and mom would make fries - Mr Potato Head always ended his existence in grease. Occasionally I'd use a carrot or some other vegetable or fruit, but it wasn't the same.
I was doing a NYT Crossword a couple of weeks ago and there was a toy theme to it. One clue was for the first toy ever advertised on television, and the answer was Mr. Potato Head.
I didn't either, just figured it out from other clues/answers. I *think* this is the first Nintendo commercial to air in the US:
O is for Mr. Owl as the cleverest of the animals, who knows exactly how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop (the original from 1970): I don't remember this one minute version but saw lots of the 30 second ads.
