He might not make it but he's definitely better than Roldan. He's going to be a part of team, next cycle.

I really have not give this much serious thought, but I wonder if the reason you see a club willing to spend 10 figures on someone like Slonina, which seems like a lot, is for exactly the reason that you don't see many GKs get a ton of first-division time in their teens, and so when they do, and they aren't destroyed by the experience, you might just decide to overpay, so to speak, for those reps. Like are there lots of examples of teen GKs who broke in, got a reasonable quantity of games, didn't flame out, and then amounted to nothing?

I mean, that is a really good and pertinent example and there are always examples! (I guess we could note that he's just still 23 but that's not really the point.) Anyway, I wasn't saying "this obviously never happens," because of course it does. I was trying to get my head around why it would make sense for a club to spend $10 million on a teenage GK since for me, which seems kind of counterintuitive to me.

I dunno, maybe it's some kind of long-term hedge against the rest of a club's portfolio of GKs over the course of a decade or something. Like, you've basically paid $10M to never have a GK below the level of Slonina for the next several years. Maybe that's a good deal!

A lot to like and he is in an excellent proving ground league, on a traditionally solid side.

GB has not been shy either about calling players quickly when they show Euro spark/success at a good level.
Whose to say he couldn’t threaten LDLT’s spot if he can’t get time in Spain, and Booth is a regular producer in the fall?

He isn’t competing with our top tier guys. It’s the second tier. He has one big drawback. GB likes to bring players in for a look see camp before blooding them. I think he trained with the team for half of the last camp if I recall, so the staff has some idea of who he is.

This is one of those where it is possible IMO. Long shot but possible. Just has to go out and blow the doors off quick.

Who knows what that amount means for them? For Roman with his multi trillion credit line that was nothing.

That's kind of my point. It's one line in a portfolio.

Sure but Abramovich isn’t there anymore. The amount they paid for him means they see him as a high end prospect and Peter Cech was reportedly the one who first identified him as a target. Now not all prospects end up making it and it’ll be important that Slonina gets loaned out somewhere he can get regular playing time.

    Who knows. He's only 18. He's a 2004! He doesn't turn 19 until next May!!
Is some club in the Championship or League One team going to bring in an 18 year old former MLSer on loan? In the middle of their season? To start him?

I don't see it. I expect Slonina to play for Chelsea in PL2 when he arrives in January.

If he didn't want that, then he shouldn't have signed for a club like Chelsea (or Real Madrid).

My expectation is that he goes to Chelsea in January and stays there till the end of the season so they can get a look at him at get a feel for where he is. And then the hope would be the following summer he goes out on loan somewhere where he can see regular playing time.
