    Lance has a poll going prior to Monday's announcement, with drop down menu's by position.

    http://lancenet.ig.com.br/especial/convoca2006/index.asp

    Mods, if this is more approriate annexed to an existing thread feel free to move.

    This was my choice:

    GK - Dida, Ceni, J.C (lack of match fitness against Marcos, or I'd take him over JC)

    Zaga - Lucio, Juan, Luisao, Cris

    RB- Cafu, Cicinho

    LB - RC, Serginho (just edges Junior)

    Volantes - Emerson, ZeRo, Edmilson, G.Silva

    Meias - Kaka, R.Gaucho, Juninho P., Alex (Redshift should be happy)

    Forwards - Ronaldo, Adriano, Robinho, Fred
    (R.Oliveira misses out due to match fitness. They didn't give Ewerthon as a choice, but he would have lost out to Robinho in my squad anyways).

    GK - Dida, R.C., Gomes (isn't he injured?)

    Zaga - Lucio, Juan, Cris, Luisao

    RB- Cafu, Cicinho

    LB - Serginho, Roberto Carlos

    Volantes - Emerson, Ze, Edmilson, Gilberto Silva

    Meias - Kaka, Ronaldinho Gaucho, Juninho P., Alex

    Forwards - Ronaldo, Adriano, Robinho, Nilmar (I've enjoyed Nilmar and Dagoberto since their youth world cup days)

    If it were possible I would take either Daniel Carvalho, Daniel Alves, and Rochembach, but they weren't in the selection.

    Agree with just about everything except I'd take Rivaldo over Alex (can be an extra striker if needed, experience, also as a matter of respect and loyalty).

    GK - Dida, Marcos, Julie Ceasar

    Zaga - Lucio, Juan, Luisao, Alex

    RB- Daniel Alves, Cicinho

    LB - Roberto Carlos, Junior

    Volantes - Emerson, Ze Roberto, Edmilson, Gilberto Silva

    Meias - Kaka, Ronaldinho Gaucho, Juninho (Lyon), Alex

    Forwards - Ronaldo, Adriano, Robinho, Ewerthon (I think Ewerthon, with his pace, can provide something different. When needed, he can play at right-wing as well)

    You know, the more I think about how strong, fit and dangerous he has looked all year, the more I like the idea of him going...

    Can't complain too much about this squad aside from choosing J.C. as the starting keeper over Dida.

    But I have a question. Isn't Serghino kind of like an outcast for once refusing a call-up years ago?

    If Zagalo has his way Little Sergio won't be in - it was Zagalo's last game in charge in November 2002 when he pulled out.

    I don't think we need 4 DMs.

    Just take Lucio, Juan, Luisao and Edmilson.

    Edmilson can play DM, if needed.

    That would open a spot for Julio Baptista or Alex.
    I would take Baptista, because no player in the squad has his style.

    Dida is my starter. I referenced JC only to point out that he took Marcos' spot on my squad due to M's recent inactivity.

    Serginho has recently gone back on his reluctance to play for the Selecao. That's why his name is in the Lance selection tool, and why he's been mentioned by a few pundits lately. As Denilson70 points out, it all may be wishful thinking on his part.

    I don't like Edmilson much in a 2-man zaga. IMO he's great as the free CB in the 3-man formation and as volante. That's why I'd rather have a truely dedicated CB in his place, and Cris seems to have won that spot (given Alex of PSV is not a CAP favorite).

    Baptista is good, but off of the balance of this season, he's not someone I'd make a place for....Alex is, and I doubt two such "exceptions" will be made. Baptista's future is as second striker; which is not necessary on this team IMO.

    First a disclaimer. I don´t follow all the players so close, I stick with their performance while they were playing in Brasil and in the NT.

    GK. Dida, Marcos, R. Ceni
    RB. Cafu, Cicinho
    CB. Lucio, Luisão, Juan, Alex
    (I would have Roque Jr. if he was playing regulary for what he played in 2002 and also in the Confederation cup final. IMO he had better performance in the NT than Juan )
    LB R. Carlos,Junior
    DM: Emerson, Ze Roberto, Gilberto Silva and Renato (for what he has done in Santos and in the NT. Know nothing about his form in Spain)
    AM: Kaka, R. Gaucho, Alex, J. Pernambucano
    Forward: Ronaldo, Robinho, Adriano and Nilmar

    The only player that was not a great player while in Brasil is Adriano. Ronaldo also went out too young, although he had some impact in Cruzeiro (in a similar fashion as Fred). All the others were among the best during their period in Brasil.

    Leo had a great season at Benfica, he's a great player. Any chance of him getting called to the Brasilian NT?

    I figure I'll call it like I see it and get a discussion going... there are sure to be some controversies with my selections.

    My convocação would be the following:

    Goleiros:
    Dida (starter) - 1
    Julio César - 12
    Gomes - 23

    Zagueiros:
    Lúcio (starter) - 3
    Alex (starter) - 4
    Edmílson (also a volante) - 15
    Juan - 14

    Laterais Direitos:
    Cafu (starter) - 2
    Cicinho - 17

    Laterais Esquerdos:
    Roberto Carlos (starter) - 6
    Zé Roberto (tambem volante) - 16

    Volantes:
    Gilberto Silva (starter) - 5
    Juninho Pernambucano (starter) - 8
    Mineiro - 19

    Meias:
    Alex (starter) - 10
    Rivaldo - 13

    Pontas:
    Gaúcho (starter, ponta esq.) - 11
    Kaká (starter, ponta dir.) - 7
    Robinho - 18
    Nilmar - 22

    Centroavantes:
    Fenomeno (starter) - 9
    Adriano - 20
    Fred - 21

    Others that I would like to take (perhaps in Nilmar´s place):
    Luisão
    Caçapa
    Kléberson
    Serginho
    Julio Batista
    Mancine

    I would definately NOT take the following:
    Émerson -- Better options. discussed at length below.
    Gustavo Nery -- Terrible form, better options (he plays on my team).
    Roque Júnior -- I hate how unfairly maligned this player is, but there are better options, and he's coming off of a serious injury / lacks match form.
    Ricardinho -- Not a bad player, but... não está jogando nada
    Marcos -- Not a bad goalkeeper... would be the natural number 12, but he is coming back from an extended injury and has hardly played this year... when he has, he's not been great.

    Edmílson, Gilbero Silva, and Mineiro are playing a lot better football than Émerson. Gilberto, in the two CL games with Villareal, had Riquelme in his back pocket despite marking him zonally. In the first game, he totally annulled him, and I mean totally… you could easily have forgotten he was on the field. In this game, Gilberto was arguably the MOM... breaking up Villareal’s play, recovering and then distributing the ball with great intelligence and vision. He nearly scored two goals as well. A true monster from one intermediaria to the other. In the games with Juve, he made Émerson look like an old man. He was great for us in the last World Cup and seems to be hitting form at the right time. He would be my starter.

    Edmílson has also been doing very well for Barça in a midfield where he is the sole DM... I’d give a slight edge to Gilberto, but Edmílson would be waiting in the wings.

    Now, my third selection would have to be the best volante currently in activity in the Brasilian league: Mineiro. He can attack and defend… and he’s been fundamental to São Paulo’s success. He would certainly be have a place on my seleção -- like Kléberson in the last WC, he might be the traditional player that wins the starting spot and never leaves it. Since I already have 4 volantes, Émerson would have to watch the WC on TV.

    My team would play like this:

    4-2-1-3
    ================Dida==================
    =====================================
    ==========Lúcio========Alex============
    Cafu============================R.Carlos
    ====================G.Silva============
    ========Juninho========================
    =====================================
    ================Alex==================
    ====Kaká==============================
    ===========================Gaúcho=====
    ==============Ronaldo==================

    If a slightly more defensive posture were needed (e.g. we are winning by two clear goals, or we are we want a slightly more cautious approach) this would be the formation. The great thing is that this switch can take place mid game without any substitutions. Thus, (and the availability of the right players) my preference for the 4-3-3 / 4-5-1.

    In the later formation, the wingers would play deeper, contributing more defensively and to attempting to impede (or at least hamper) the advance of the opposing full backs. I would interspace traditional marking with pressure marking at certain moments in the game. Depending on Ronaldo’s form, I would replace him (in this formation) with a faster striker (also with the ability to head) to better exploit through balls and potential counters. This could be done as a second half substation, and only if his form was not particularly good. Another tactical variant could be the substitution of Alex for a second traditional centerforward, resulting in a return to the 4-2-2-2 “magic box”.

    4-2-3-1
    ================Dida==================
    =====================================
    ==========Lúcio========Alex============
    Cafu============================R.Carlos
    ====================G.Silva============

    One other note: I'd start Juninho at first, because he plays the 2nd Volante role well... however, if he proved to leave something to be desired defensively, I'd try out Mineiro and Edmilson in this position, and make Juninho Alex´s sub.

    Mine would be...Starters: Júlio César; Cicinho, Lúcio, Juan, Roberto Carlos; Edmilson e Zé Roberto; Kaká e Ronaldinho Gaúcho; Adriano e Ronaldo

    Reservas:

    G: Dida e Rogerio Ceni

    LD:Cafu

    Z: Luisão

    LE:Junior

    V: Emerson, Gilberto Silva e Mineiro

    M: Juninho Pernambucano e Alex

    A: Robinho e Fred

    But WE ALL KNOW it will be...

    Starters; Dida; Cafu, Lúcio, Juan, Roberto Carlos; Emerson e Zé Roberto; Kaká e Ronaldinho Gaúcho; Adriano e Ronaldo

    Reservas:

    G: Júlio César e Marcos

    LD: Cicinho

    Z: Luisão e Roque Junior

    LE: Gustavo Nery

    V: Edmilson, Gilberto Silva

    M: Juninho Pernambucano e Ricardinho

    A: Robinho e Fred

    The only position that is questionable is G.Nery, but I still think he will be called up.

    I say we need two strikers instead of just ronaldo by himself up there

    we should put adriano with him, because he usually does well for the selecao even though his goal scoring form at inter has been poor

    It would not work.
    Ronaldinho and Alex don't contribute defensively and commit horrible fouls when they try. Juninho is great, but he doesn't defend as well as Emerson.
    Ze Roberto is important because he gives 110% and never gets tired.
    It would be better to have Gilberto + Ze Roberto, Emerson + Ze Roberto or Mineiro + Ze Roberto.

    Dida has been VERY poor.
    Ronaldo can't play as a lone striker. If you followed Real Madrid's games this season you would have noticed it. He needs a partner to share the defender's attention. He has even stated that he prefers Adriano to Robinho because of this.

    Yeah, I would have to agree with the formation minus Juninho in that role. I would put Emerson, or Edmilson behind Alex to make up for the defense frailties. Here is mines, too lazy to type it all out at the omment.

    EDIT: wasnt big enough.

    Keepers:
    Dida, Ceni, Gomez
    Centerbacks: Lucio, Luisao, Juan, Alex
    Right wingbacks: Cafu, Cicinho
    Left Wingbacks: Carlos, Junior
    Defensive midfielders: Gilberto Silva, Emerson, Edmilson, Ze Roberto (utilitário)
    Attacking Midfielders: Ronaldinho Gaucho, Kaka, Alex, Jununho Pernambucano
    Strikers/Forwards: Ronaldo, Adriano, Robinho, Ewerthon

    LIke I said in the post, I would start Juninho, and tweak it from there. If it was found to be defensively lacking, I'd put first Mineiro, then Edmílson or Ze Roberto alongside Gilberto Silva and move Juninho onto the bench.

    I disagree that his dfensive work is all that bad, but I'd use the group phase to iron out the kinks.

    Also, Ronaldo would not be the lone striker, but one of three... see the original post... when I said that if we went to 4-2-3-1, I would make a decision about Ronaldo based on his form. Even then, he'd hardly be isolated with the amount Gaúcho and Alex can get forward.

    Dida's form has started to improve, and we was probably MOM in the game against Barcelona. He would be my starter.

    Interesting. I too, would try starting Juninho b/c I think it makes more balanced and equally dangerous. Who would you bench?
    First off: what is our current formation and what's yours?

    Another reason why I wouuldnt start Juninho, is because there would be two players who need the ball and will not make runs and such. Alex needs the ball at his feet, and Juninho needs the ball at his feet. That would be like having Riquelme and Veron on the same side.
