I've been a King's X fan since the early 90's. I've lost count on how many times I have seen them live. It's gotta be somewhere around 25 times. If you want to see a great live band that is tight and really knows how to play their instruments, then King's X is your band. I'm actually going to miss watching the US v. Mexico game live on the August 12 because King's X is playing at the Sellersville Theater the same night. It is a hell of a decision, but I can record the game, but not the concert. And yes, I guess they are Hippy Metal! I am a recent Helmet convert. I've always kinda liked them, but never really gave them a fair chance. I bought thier greatest hits album a few months ago and I was hooked. Talk about an underrated band whose influence can be heard on a lot of today's music (just like my other band, King's X). I would love to hear them live and have my ears melted! I don't know about now, but back in the 90's they had the reputation of being one of the loudest bands out there.
If you like Dropkick Murphys, there are a few other bands that might be worth your checkin out. Flatfoot 56 is an amazing (very young) group from the Southside of Chicago. Also, the Tossers , also from Chicago. And, of course-you can never go wrong with Flogging Molly. My top five favorites right now are: 1) The Press (NYC ///) 2) Those Unknown (NJ/SF) 3) Cock Sparrer (UK) 4) Sick of it All (NYC) 5) Reazione (Italy ///)
Also, both singers from DKM have other bands that are right on time. Mike M. formed the Street Dogs and Al Barr sang for the Bruisers. I think one of the other members of the Street Dogs was with the Bruisers, also. Another good band formed out of the Bruisers and that whole Boston git up is Death & Taxes. You'll have to excuse me, as I can go on and on about music.
metal shoulnd't be happy. i can't stand the dude's voice. (the real reason i don't like them) are you also into prog? if so you never get to talk to kath unless i need to distract her for a few hrs.
I've seen Gwar twice and each time i've come out of the pit area covered in a different liquid substance. They're a great time live.
OMG I used to love the Descendents. I never met anyone who knew who they were before now. *I wanna be a clone. I want a suburban home...* oh shit, wait a sec...
I have a slightly new top 5 1.) Still Jack's Mannequin 2.) Still Los Campesinos! 3.) Mae 4.) The Yeah Yeah Yeahs 5.) Art Brut
Re: Your FIVE Favorite Bands Right Now. (Not of all time) How is it pretentious for me to listen to bands who are local contemporaries? If I listen to punk for a while, I'll listen to a bunch of London punk bands like the Pistols, PIL, the Clash, etc. and if I decide to listen to the Madchester scene, I'll listen to the Stone Roses, Inspiral Carpets, the Happy Mondays, or the Charlatans. If I'm feeling Britpoppish, I'll go for Blur, Suede, or Elastica. It just so happens that when I answered this question, I'd been listening to a lot of the very good modern Sheffield Indie scene.
Re: Your FIVE Favorite Bands Right Now. (Not of all time) At what point do you decide to try a few indie bands from the US, your highness?
Re: Your FIVE Favorite Bands Right Now. (Not of all time) local to who? you must have one hell of a commute coming from england.
I got it figured out. Fish Houuk has a split personality, only one half lives in the midlands of England. There is no medication for it.
My Five: 1) Bouncing Souls 2) The Horrors 3) The Fraelilis (spelling) 4) The Real McKenzies 5) Atmosphere and other assortment of indie rappers
Re: Your FIVE Favorite Bands Right Now. (Not of all time) Local to each other. And it's whom, in this case. I like plenty of American bands, but except for Seattle grunge and post-grunge, they aren't really grouped into scenes the way the British bands are. I'll listen to The White Stripes, The Kings of Leon, The Violent Femmes, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Foo Fighters, The Boxing Oscars, R.E.M., Weezer, and if I can be allowed to claim the Canucks as ours, Rush and Arcade Fire.
