I just got FSW and have only seen the Celtic - Livingston game so far, but I really enjoyed. I'm going to be sure to catch every scottish game I can. So with my newfounded interest in the SPL (or is it SPF), I was wondering how many of you became interested in your respective teams.

BTW, I had to leave before the end of the Celtic vs. Livingston game, what was the result?

I picked up the soccer bug in a serious way after spending most of 1989 and 1990 in Europe and following Italia '90 pretty closely.

After I got home -- long before the birth of MLS -- I sort of cast about for a team to take an interest in. Living in Chicago I could have picked just about anyone, but English and Scottish teams seemed to have the best coverage in terms of places to go see games. Also, there was not the language barrier associated with other leagues.

After that is was, well, I'm Irish-American.. There is no Irish Leauge Football on... Celtic it is then.

Sort of the same way I got stuck being a Cubs fan. Growing up in Iowa... Twins play in a dome, nope.. White Sox, ugh, those uniforms (late 70's early 80's)... Cubs, nice ballpark, poor slobs are due to win a pennant soon, games are on TV every day, Harry Caray... Cubs it is then.

Such simple logic. Such tragic consequences. :)

I picked up watching Rangers when Reyna was there.

I rooted for them when Reyna was there. I don't care now but I enjoy watching Henrik Larsson.
I just feel sorry for the Scots that their league is dominated forever by just two teams.
I hope that changes somehow, someday. Getting almost as bad in the English Premier League, but not quite.

    What about Hearts?

I have a suggestion for anyone out there looking for a Scottish team to "adopt" Heart of Midlothian (Hearts) are traditionally the "Third Force" in Scotland. Hailing from the capital city ,Edinburgh Hearts ,although not having the wealth or massive fan base of the "Old Firm" have not inherited the bigotry that surrounds the Glasgow pair, they are the romantic side of Scottish football ,consider them

Dunfermline....because Nazareth is from there and I love their music....and East Fife because I picked up a replica jersey at a Big Lots for $5 about 3 years ago and it's still in one piece, unlike the $75 I spent on a damn Nike replica of another team.

Dunfermline. It is just a cool sounding name. Any team with a name like that you have to respect, and follow.

I support Rangers because of Reyna. But I hope one day there will be a new champion besides Rangers or Celtic.

I just wish the Old Firm would go to the EPL and leave the rest of the league to enjoy glorious competition amongst themselves.....can you imagine? Dunfermline as Scottish Champions....a return to glory for Hearts, Aberdeen, Dundee United....Rangers and Celtic need new challenges and the others need the opportunity to fight for something other than 3rd place.

I wish the Old Firm would quit being little pricks and share the TV revenue evenly. It would close the gap some.

My fave team is Cowdenbeath for the sole reason that it's fun to say "Cowdenbeath." I also look after Iverness Caledonian Thistle too, as both teams are fun to have control of in CM.

Motherwell FC, the club that sold my Rapids John Spencer. Not to mention they have the "Messiah" of Scottish football, McFadden. And they'll stay up again this year!

I had taken a trip to Scotland in the summer of '98 and reading about soccer in the papers every day got me back into the sport.

Celtic had just won the championship for the first time in ages and reading about the team reminded me a ton of pretty much every Philly team since I've been alive. Passionate fans, teams that are usually promising, but equally usually heartbreaking. Seemed like a match made in Heaven.

So, of course, they finish behind Rangers the following two seasons, cementing the fact I made the correct choice in teams.

I would like to have a favorite Scottish team, but I just can't find a team that makes me like them.

    Old Firm - no chance

What I like in a team:

    1) Youth - Develop them, promote them, play them

    2) Sound business sense - going to be tough in Scotland

    3) Good looking uniforms (No green, orange, yellow)

    4) Cool fans - easy for most Scottish teams right.

    5) Nice mailing list.

    6) Doesn't have to be SPL team.

I'm leaning towards Ross County or Aberdeen.

    Any suggestions?

I don't know how many criteria they fit, but how about Inverness Calley Thistle?

Can't go wrong with Peterhead. Great name, and they're in a promotion dog fight to get out of the 3rd division. And you can't be accused of glory-hunting.

My brother and I started to follow the SPL because we're of Scots descent. We had to go with a Glasgow team since our family was apparently from western Scotland, and in the U.S. you can really only get the Old Firm anyway.

All I could ever find out about the fans was the religious rivalry, so as good Protestants, we're Rangers supporters.

    How about Ross County?

    Aberdeen?

    Dunfermeline?

    Any comments?

    Aaaaah!

    St. Johnstone!

Beautiful little stadium in a nice little town, about as small as would be possible for the SPL and constantly fighting for a place there...

And if you're looking for somebody to pay attention to right now, Saints are three points back from promotion, having won eight straight games....

Celtic all the way. I've got Irish roots, I've attended their games whenever opportunity arises since I was 5-6 and my Gramps flew halfway across the world to watch the Lisbon final in 1967. He still has the game programme framed above the fireplace.
