I trust that some of you have heard of Martyn Clarke, the young phenom from the Falkland Islands who is believed by many to be the next Maradona. Check out this link: www.guardian.co.uk/falklands/story/0,11707,769025,00.html Interenstingly, England wants Clarke to play for its national team, but Scotland objected, saying that if the Falkland Islands belong to the UK, then there is no reason why Clarke should play for England rather than Scotland. A representative from FIFA said that the Falkland Islands would be welcome to field their own team, as all members and colonies of the UK are entitled to individual representation. But it wasn't clear if there were enough players in the islands to fill a full squad. Argentina's Grondona said in a statement that since the Islands belong to Argentina, and since Argentina is the only country with claims to the Islands that actually fields a united team, then Clarke should play for Argentina. Here is some additional information: www.FutbolArgentino.co/ar/FIFA/Clarke/0,14802,70205,00.html It is really a shame that a player of such great promise like Clarke has to be caught up in all this political infighting.
I think in this case he can play for any of the four UK countries that he wants to. I doubt he'd be able to play for Argentina as he isn't Argentinian. The fact that Argentina thinks it ought to own the piece of land on which he is born is irrelevant, only the player's nationality counts.
