On Instagram Lily Yohannes announced her intent to compete for the US: "I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the United States and Dutch Football Federations for their unwavering support and patient guidance as I made my decision regarding my international future. Their dedication and encouragement have been invaluable, and I extend my heartfelt thanks to both Federations. "After much consideration, I have decided to commit to represent my country, the United States. The US is my homeland, my birthplace, and where my extended family resides. These strong connections have driven me to honor my roots and proudly commit to US Soccer. I am excited and eager to continue putting in the work and earn my place on the US Women's National Team."
That is ceryainly good news. Horan, Coffey, Yohannes, Albert, and LaVelle is certainly a great place to start in CM. Not quite Ertz, Mewis, Horan, LaVelle level good, but not far off, potentially.
Give me Coffey, Yohannes, and Shaw. Or go with the all-teen (until Nov. 20) midfield of Hutton, Yohannes, and Shaw.
For those who were second guessing how Emma was working things with Yohannes, here's your answer. Emma knew what she was doing.
I'll stick with Coffey, the Captain, and Rose for now. But Albert, Yohannes, and Shaw (if in MF) are certainly knocking.
Well, I expect she'll be called in for the Euro friendlies, as it will be a short trip for her. Depending who else gets called in, I can see her getting subbed in around 60 minutes for midfield duty, but less likely to start. Just too little experience within the US squad to be starting.
Yes, she did, but I imagine it wasn't too hard a sell either. The fact that she said she would have to earn her spot, has got to have been from Emma. But I'm sure Emma stressed the fact that it's championship or bust at every major tournament. Not many national teams have those aspirations.
Lily is a US citizen. Her commitment to play for the US is a bit dramatic since she is not eligible to play for the Dutch. This feels like a PR game by her stage father.
She was working towards getting her Dutch citizenship, hence, eligibility to play for the Dutch. I'm not sure why that's even a discussion? Brazilian born Cat Macario is proof of that possibility. As per this article: Teenage star Yohannes picks USWNT over Netherlands "Last month, Dutch national team head coach Andries Jonker said the Dutch FA [KNVB] was actively recruiting Yohannes." As per the above linked article: Netherlands 'working on' recruiting USWNT prospect Yohannes "Then Nigel de Jong came in [as KNVB technical director]. He is working on this. We have explicitly agreed that he will take this on. He informs me properly about the state of affairs." ... Yohannes is believed to be close to securing her Dutch citizenship, but Jonker said that process had not yet been completed.
I am fully aware of this. It doesn't change anything I wrote. She may or may not have received Dutch citizenship, but her dad is a stage dad. Their public notice to get Dutch citizenship can still be a ploy to get US Soccer's attention, and it certainly appears to have worked.
Her dad may very well be what you described him as, but that's still a lot of assuming. It's like you're saying that Emma Hayes cannot properly identify young talent and can be tricked into taking-on average players. Yikes! Other than a few call ups with the full USWNT, what is Lily really guaranteed by the federation/Hayes?
Your argument doesn't make any sense. She didn't get called up for the Olympics and we don't have another competitive tournament for years. So what did she get? Attention? She got that when she was the youngest ever player in the UWCL. Hell, she didn't even get a Hayes quote or USSF produced video for the announcement. So your argument is, what, that her father moved the family across an ocean when Lily was a child just so he can get 5 minutes of fame when his daughter announces to play for the country of her birth instead of the country she has spent almost half her life in which you discount as no real connection? It seems like a lot of people nowadays have more hatred than brains.
You reached far to make that argument work. It has nothing to do with moving to the Netherlands when she was young. She was offered a reserve spot on the Olympic roster. She declined it. Her father wanted better. He tried to strong arm US Soccer and did not get his way. Just like he pushed for US Soccer to bring her in initially to a full senior camp at 16 years old. He did so by teasing that she could get Dutch citizenship. Go scroll his twitter feed. He is something else.
I never said she is not talented. Do not twist my words. She is very talented and I suspect she will do well for us.
Erm, sorry, but I need to see more before she supplants the many, many midfielders we currently have to "start". Not saying she can't supplant a Rose or a Horan but I need to see her on the pitch in games that matter. I've seen Rose and Horan playing in massive games. Need to see the kids do likewise.
For those who are more familiar, where does Yohannes fall on the 6-8-10 scale in CM? 6: Ertz, Coffey, Sullivan 6-8: Boxx (more 6), Sam Mewis (8) 6-8-10: Horan, Foudy 8-10: Lavelle 10/attacker: Shaw, Macario, Wagner I know she isn't a 10 or 8/10, but have not seen her much. If my midfield is: 1) Coffey (6), Albert (8), and Horan (10), who does she replace? 2) Coffey (6), Horan (8), and Lavelle/Shaw (10), who does she replace? I am thinking more 8, but am I wrong? Couod she play the 6 if Coffey is out?
Why does Yohannes need to replace somebody now? When she's in her prime, Horan and Lavelle will be almost 40.
Take all the time you need to decide, but we need an answer before our match on November 30*. *This November, 2024
This is a good question that I have been wondering about and I'd like to hear from folks who have seen her play a lot. I've scoured the internet for every video I could find of her, mostly what I have see are all touch type videos. Club, UCL etc. She is what, just 17 so she isn't a finished product but my first inclination is that she is an 8. She is a good shuttler, but what really stands out is her passing range, it's crazy good, world class good. She seems elite when it comes to progressive passing and is excellent in transition. She is press resistant, a master at using her body to handle a defender, very physical for her age, and with an impressive outside shot. I'm sure there are coaches out there that would see her as a 6 DLP type, but she seems fairly goal dangerous and my guess is that she plays as some type of an 8 or 8/10. Closest comp on the current squad might be Rose. Lily has better passing range and is much more physical, Rose might be a bit more nifty in tight spaces, maybe better as a lock picker against a bunker but to be honest, IDK about that. Again, I have only seen her live a couple of times but this would be my impression of her.
Is Lilly fast? I know Rose is a burner. That is part of Rose's game that is overlooked. I've seen her 15 yards behind the 6 and track down the defender our 6 is trying to catch, passing our 6 in the process.
