What's with all the soccer coverage, anyway? It feels weird.

Apparently Yoda states that Becks was flat after being overused in the pre season so he had to throw Chung in there, whom I believe played every pre season game as well. But I can understand, you want your best guys out there for the pre season. Becks does not do a Carrieri and seems ready to get out there and prove himself. I hope Yoda gives him more than one game. It is crucial he be given a chance to fill that midfield role. If he can do it, the Rapids can be set in middle for a while.

Between the comments in the post article, Carrieri mentioning something about Beckerman having "shin problems" in his interview w/Connolly, and quotes here:

    http://www.cybersoccernews.com/mls/rapids/030424col-dcadv.shtml

it would seem that we are starting to get some kind of story about why Beckerman didn't start in the SJ game. I'm not saying I fully understand it or anything, just that we are getting at least some explanation for the wacky lineup.

I hope Beckerman gets his share of chances. I'm way more interested in seeing a young American develop than some older European player.

Kyle's preseason basically started in nov. he played many games on many trips with project 40 and under 23's in nov,dec and jan. I did hear that the area where he had broken his leg was acting up in march. Maybe he did need a break and it just happen to be needed in the first game. who knows. let's just hope he gets adequate time this year.

The Rapids seem really disorderly at the moment.

I didn't know that Beckerman had a steel plate in his leg. I never knew his break was that serious.

Im looking forward to this game. Both teams are going to be desperate for a win.

Maybe, but one would think that because Hankinson knows Beckerman's U23 schedule and knows of his injury and knows the player roster situation with his team and knows the preseason schedule and knows the date of the first game, he might have handled the preseason differently.

One would assume that he wouldn't pace a player through training so tht the player needed a rest on the night of the first game of the season. If the guy had a nagging injury, he should have been given some time off already. Pablo got time off and Schmidt was the only forward who played the whole preseason because of various nagging injuries. Why did Beckerman have to play it all the way through?

I honestly think the correct answer from Hankinson is "I lost my nerve and was afraid to put Beckerman in there so I came up with a half cocked lineup." Sure, Beckerman may have had pain in his leg but I bet you he was ready to go. The interview with him on the MLSnet sure made it seem like he was disappointed not to be in there.

I watched every game that Beckerman played for the Fusion (not many) and I've got to say the kid really wasn't there at that time and consequently spent a LOT of time on the bench. Admittedly the Fusion had an excellent lineup its last season so his chances of displacing anyone were slim to begin with. Having said that though he just didn't cut it.

One thing that is evident in this league is that the kids are coming up the ranks in double time. Not being here last year, did Beckerman perform. Is he up for it?

Beckerman should be given at least a decent amount of minutes and games before all the criticism begins. If he would of been on any other team these past three years he would of had more of a fighting chance for playing time and wouldn't always feel like he is on trial the minute he gets on the field. In miami he came in mid season and then second year had bishop, chacon, henderson, rooney, preki who were all-stars!!! Last year he had the all-stars- henderson, pablo, pibe and chung.. There were plenty of games last year that some of the players did not play up to their best but they continued to play week in and week out.

Well, they need *something* to replace the reams of Avs coverage that suddenly disappeared. ;D

Why should a loss be put on one person's shoulder?
They didn't win and he never played!! Obviously some of the guys who played did not have a good game, but will stil be playing today. If Hankinson won't ever have confidence in him even after a good preseason, he should go somewhere else..

I guess I don't fully understand the issues surrounding the inury or pain that was happening. But my question is why was he out there during halftime kicking the ball around? Would one not be resting to get better and not agitate the inury or pain moreso?

I think we can all agree that the correct assumptions about kyle are
    1. after season ended in oct. he played alot with pro 40's, 23's and rapids preseason
    2. yes, his leg flared up where the metal plate is in late march
    3. the leg was probably better but he was flat so he didn't play
    4. he is playing tonight and hopefully will be given more games to get a chance to gel with pablo.

Conservatively. He seemed to play like a guy starting his first MLS game in an important role. It seemed like he didn't want to screw it up, lotsa square and negative play.

Is this Otto person new to the Post? I have to admit, I get most of my soccer news here, not from the newspaper. But I did drop a quick e-mail to the Post to thank them for running all these pieces lately. If anybody else wants to drop them a line, you can use sports@denverpost.com

Interesting. I did see some of the beginning of the game and noticed he served about 3 or 4 hospital balls to teammates on passes that didn't seem particularly difficult. I figured it was a case of opening game (for him) nerves.

I don't know how he could of played any differently!!! He had pressure on him because he would like more gamesso he didn't want to screw up. The regulars can screw up and not have to worry about being pulled. They will play each game.Everyone in this league is given ample playing time to get adjusted, become more confident and creative. Why anyone thinks he should of done it all in one game is beyond me.

You're making a rash judgment that really isn't supported by too many of the posts in this or other threads.

I don't think anyone was expecting the second coming of Maradona. Nor does anyone sound overly disappointed -- let alone calling for his head and demanding he never be started again.

Rather I think the fans here for once are being unilaterally realistic in understanding that it's going to take a good number of games in this role before Beckerman is able to begin making an impact.
