What are some remixes that are better than the original, or provide a whole new interpretation? My favorites: Badly Drawn Boy "The Shining" (The Avalanches Good Word For the Weekend Remix) Mos Def, Diverse, Prefuse 73 "Wylin Out" (RJD2 Remix) - I haven't heard the original but I can't imagine it being better than RJD2's version DJ Shadow "Six Days" (with Mos Def) The Roots & Cody Chesnutt "The Seed 2.0" (not so much a remix as it is a re-recording of the version on Cody Chesnutt's album) Common "Soul By The Pound" Mystic "The Life" (with Talib Kweli) Missy "Get Ur Freak On" (with Nelly Furtado) Ice Cube "Watch Yourself) (with Das EFX and the Grandmaster Flash sample)
A couple from the top of the head... 1) "Flava In Ya Ear" - Craig Mack, Notorious BIG, Rampage, LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes 2) "Nappy Heads" - The Fugees (the radio version, the one that became popular, was a remix. The album version sucked) 3) "Love Rain" - Jill Scott feat. Mos Def (take your pick, but I like the Coffee Show mix) ...and, for non-hip-hop... 4) "Bossa Nova" - Smoke City (I don't know who did it, but I can't stop listening to it) RS
OK, I'm a populist.. Madonna - Drowned World/Substitute For Love (BT/Sasha Remix) - this is awesome music. Everything But The Girl - Missing (Todd Terry remixes) - turned the song from unlistenable crud to something hypnotic and easy to listen to over and over and over Tori Amos - Professional Widow (Arnand Van Helden mixes) - same Madonna - American Life (Felix Da Housecat Devin Dazzle Club Mix) - restructured the vocal completely, made it much different.. A redone song completely. Duran Duran - The Reflex (Dance Mix by Nile Rodgers) - the song as done by Duran is pretty crappy, Nile took it to a whole different level to make it the great pop song it is.. "ta na na na" Duran Duran - Out Of My Mind (Perfecto Mix) - Paul Oakenfold can't do much wrong. Pet Shop Boys - Music For Boys (Part 3, I think by Altern 8) fun party song.
THe remixes of Korn's "Freak on a Leash", "Here To Stay", and Make me Bad" I believe Butch Vig did these under another name
I don't buy tons of remixes, but how come NOONE HAS LISTED THE F'ING COLCUT "SEVEN MINUTES OF MADNESS" MIX FOR ERIC B. AND RAKIM'S "PAID IN FULL"?? Ahem, sorry about that...
Forgot about these two. Also, Mariah Carey's "Fantasy". Somehow, Ol' Dirty Bastard can make a song involving Mariah and P.Diddy into a near-classic.
"Me and Mariah - go back like babies and pacifiers..." Also, a bunch of female MCs took the rather bland "I Wanna Be Down" by Brandy and made it, well, slightly less bland. It was Lyte, Yo-Yo, and...not Monie...Latifah? Maybe. Does the Lounge Mix of "The Fly" by U2 count? RS
