Every time Marvell Wynne's name is referenced in a US Youth Soccer of college soccer thread, someone inevitably asks if he is the son of the former outfielder of the same name. So, I'd really like to see this thread MADE A STICKY so that we can avoid it being asked anymore since it has been discussed almost as often as Freddy Adu's age or Landon Donovan's desire to go to Europe! What follows is some info on Marvell the soccer player and his dad. Here's a story on Marvell and his dad. http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/preps/20040106-9999_1s6p-preptu.html Marvell, II's UCLA bio http://uclabruins.collegesports.com/sports/m-soccer/mtt/wynne_marvell00.html Marvell, II's USSF bio: (Not much there yet.) http://www.ussoccer.com/bio/bio.sps?iBiographyID=11786 Marvell Sr.'s career stats http://www.baseball-reference.com/w/wynnema01.shtml or... http://www.baseball-almanac.com/players/player.php?p=wynnema01 Dad's salary his final three MLB seasons. http://asp.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/salaries/playerdetail.aspx?player=1764 (Assuming it hasn't been squandered, the Wynne's are probably doing OK!) Here's a link to a bunch of stories on Marvel as a baseball player. Turns out he ended his career in Japan for two seasons so maybe Marvell II could play in the J-League someday like his dad! http://www.baseballlibrary.com/baseballlibrary/sabr/tbi/W/Wynne_Marvell.tbi.stm
Sandon - Is his dad that baseball player? Maybe we need a FAQ. Is Freddy Adu really only 15? How can Spector play in England? ....
Yeah, but one of the articles on Marvell said his folks are separated - and in California, that ain't cheap!
For a .247 career hitter, that wasn't too bad at all, for that point in time. However, can you imagine what he'd be making now? Reminds me of an oft-quoted line (I think it was Tommy Heinson who said it) when in reference to the way some salaries have escalated for athletes in team sports, "I said to my mother, 'Why couldn't you have waited?'" As for the younger Marvell Wynne, I knew the name was familiar when I saw the press report yesterday, but I never made the connection. But in terms of athletic endeavors, it's good to see that talent-wise, the apple hasn't fallen far from the tree.
Actually a FAQ is a great idea. One on the USA board and one for the MLS board would spare us many threads, much rancor, and almost all of the gratuitous cheese posts.
