It was also never a penalty. Terrible decision, made even worse by the failure to send Sharp off a few minutes later. Really poor showing from Andy Madley. Three big decisions to make and he's ********ed up two of them. Newcastle don't deserve to get anything out of this because of their negative setup and miserable performance, but they've been robbed by the ref. Yedlin subbed off in the 85th.
Bummer of a penalty to get called for a handball while the attacker is grabbing your shirt and pushing you. The initial no-call felt fair enough. It's also one of those unfortunate matches where the big debatable decisions all went the same way. That's what it takes for Sheffield United 20-21 to win a game, I guess.
Sheffield almost had an own goal backpass header on the second to last play that resulted in a corner kick which fell to Murphy, who narrowly missed the far post with a placed shot from 20 yards on the last kick of the game. Would have been deeply, deeply psychologically damaging to Sheffield United. Wish it had happened.
We move to Istanbul. I forgot that this thread exists. Bump. Yedlin playing pretty well as a fairly defensive RB at Alanyaspor.
Yedlin starts vs. Ezurumspor, At RB of an apparent 4-1-4-1. Already getting forward into the offensive corner, twice in the first three minutes.
Yedlin nice driven cross to the penalty spot leads to a blocked shot on what might have been the best opportunity of the game either way. Galatasary pretty dominant.
Point blank opportunity for Yedlin inside the six yard box, leaning right footed shot requires a miraculous save by the keeper. Called offside, but very debatable - it came off of a defender on what I think was viewed as a flick-on by the Galatasaray attacker. Yedlin was clearly offside if you think it was a flick-on, VAR-close if it wasn't on the original pass. Anyway, awesome save make it moot.
Really sweet play by Yedlin - Long ball into the corner, he volleys it overhead to himself, then makes a quick cut ro a blocked cross that leads to a corner. And Galatasaray score off of the corner! 1-0.
Galatasaray up 2-0 chipped ball over the top to an offside player - who stops his run and takes himself out of the play. Defense and goalie expected play to stop - second Galatasaray attacker runs onto it and blasts off the underside of the crossbar for a goal. Ezerumspor briefly refuse to kick off, but we're playing again.
Of course. The BB players obviously should have played to the whistle. Yedlin with 2 good defensive plays in the box this half, a clearance and a tackle.
Terrible back pass by Yedlin’s replacement Linnes leads to a Sivasspor goal. Falcao then equalizes for Gala.
Yedlin starts vs Fatih Karagumuruk, which no longer features Eric Lichaj. Galatasaray had an earlier goal called back for a handball, 0-0. Yedlin takes a cleat to the ankle that looked really bad - at the very least, a great deal of pain. He is off the field, but not yet replaced.
Galatasaray conceding all possession and moved Mohamed from striker to RB to temporarily replace Yedlin during a surprisingly long diagnostic period. Yedlin back on, but several Galatasary players warming up because they don't seem sure he can go.
I didn't even check to see if he was in the lineup today, but here he is as the starting right back in a huge game. 2-1 on some controversial calls. Just made a good wide open cross that wasn't finished.
Looked it up - Yedlin was an unused sub last week. This is very encouraging that he will be available for one of the US's national team obligations this summer - his odds of getting chosen go up the more we're spreading the work out between Nations League and Gold Cup, and using different squads. Guess we'll see.
Full time 3-1 win. Yedlin with great defense with speed in the last minute to cleanly prevent what otherwise was a sitting duck shot to beat the keeper. Good game, and nice to see him trusted with the big game. They're heavily favored in the last two, including one on poor Denizlispor and Mix, who will probably be leaving that club upon relegation.
I got them 2014 World Cup vibes as Yedlin and Diskerud go head to head to start this one. Yedlin had an acrobatic flying volley attempt and is ranging way upfield with the score 0-0, Mix had one creative pass that led to a counterattack shot well-saved.
