CNN is reporting a popular uprising in Basra! Not near a TV so I dont have much more info. Please post if you have any. Hopefully other citizens around half fallen cities can take their cue.
Might not be true, but let's hope... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/2886235.stm CNN.com is also reporting it.
The last time Basra had an uprising, the coalition failed to help and the rebels got crushed by Saddam. Hopefully it will be different this time.
Bush promised democratic government. I don't think the US will fall so far short of that goal as to leave Saddam in power. It would be bad for business for one thing.
Hey Dante, do you consider Al Jazeera to be hostile media? They are the guys that broadcast the POW footage.
I don't consider them hostile, they have an audience and they're appeasing them. Just like the networks here do. I do think that they're a little too sarcastic though.
Al jazeera has receveid the same kind of complaints from a lot of arabic countries in other occasions (at least as I heard in a report). They just show almost everything. Of course it's an arab tv and their audience is arab. I can watch it with my sat dish but I have "some" problems in understanding what they say (it's impossible to understand a word except some geographic location). Basra possible uprising is good news.
Izzit good news? Yes, its nice if they are revolting and killing Iraqi soldiers. But it also mean they probably have guns - and I see no guarantee that they will only point the guns at Iraqi soldiers. It was pretty cool when afghanis revolted against the Russians, wasn't it - but how many of them put down their guns afterwards? It's better news than all civilians barricading themselves in and shooting at UK troops, but...
MSNBS says that the British have confirmed an uprising in Basra and that mortars are being fired by Iraqi troops on the citizens. Again...I'll still take this with a grain of salt, but this is so massive if it's true.
Shiite group says revolt under way in Basra "TEHRAN (AFP) - An uprising against Iraqi President Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s regime is under way in the southern city of Basra, the main Shiite Iraqi opposition group said. "A revolt is taking place in Basra," Mohammad Hadi, spokesman of the Iran-based Supreme Assembly for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, told AFP." http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tm...030325/wl_mideast_afp/iraq_war_basra_uprising
By all accounts it's true, though there are no reports on how it's actually going. UK troops have captured the leading Ba'ath Party official in Basra, which may be the reason why this happened. http://www.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30000-1085087,00.html http://www.cnn.com/2003/WORLD/meast/03/25/sprj.irq.war.main/index.html British troops have started to get water into the city.
about 30 minutes ago Aljazeera had alive interview with there guys Inside Basrah, and he said that this information wasn't true.
Who knows what the size of this uprising is? It could be going on in one part of the town while the other sleeps.
Maj Gen Peter Wall, the British chief of staff at Allied Central Command in Qatar, confirmed there appeared to be an uprising in Basra. He said it seemed to be in its "infancy" and that British troops were "keen to exploit its potential". http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,921784,00.html
Could be, but the timing of this supposed uprising is a little suspicious, its 12:20 AM Basraha Time. In few hours we will see the truth
