I think it's because of how many NCAA athletes go pro in something other than sports.

I'm sorry, but I hate to see something like that. Such predatory call up. Quinones, Diaz, Rivera are good prospects with a chance to be USMNT or high-level USYNT players with continued development.

Puerto Rico is irrelevant in soccer. They won't ever make a World Cup. They probably won't make a Gold Cup in the careers of these players.

Vega, I understand. There's not a realistic development path where he's a USMNT player, and his YNT career is over. Angking would likely be similar, although he's more talented and I don't think it's out of the question he could eventually develop into a really good player in the next five years.

However, calling up what are in effect complete prospects who've not even played a game of first team football is going to be very damaging to our player pool. These small Island nations like Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, T&T are going to start doing big damage to our player pool. I don't think we are yet good enough to chop off ~5% of our player pool of players with real talent.

It's annoying, but I wouldn't call it a predatory call up. I don't think PR is capping someone like Diaz just to cap-tie them — he's already good enough for their team.

Like you, I don't see a lot of upside to committing to PR at this early juncture, but maybe they just want to. I certainly hope they are fully aware of the stakes of playing in WCQ for PR. Sometimes kids aren't.

It's more like kids making bad choices.

Hopefully, he doesn’t play. That’s a 28 man roster; USSF should be on the phone making sure he’s sure.

Isn't Sarachan the PR coach now? His natural tendency will be to recruit every player in MLS, YNT, and USL with Puerto Rican roots. Probably the reason why they hired him in the first place.

Also, he's presumably not putting a gun to their heads.
These kids are accepting the callups to Puerto Rico.

To be honest, Puerto Rico should be a lot better than they are. I expect them to get Servania too.........................

FYI, pre-pandemic FC Dallas ran two affiliate clubs in Puerto Rico. I don't know what happened in 2020.

For Servania that would be one time switch.

Seems hard to believe we won't see a few more Yanks on the rosters for this tournament.

Meantime, Dutch names are just terrific and I sometimes wish I had one. How is it possible that there's a guy named Cody who isn't American? But there is...

No Jonathan Gonzales. Is he injured or not even in the U23 pictures at this point?

Damian Alguera (‘04) for El Salvador. Youngest kid at the tournament. They poached him right out of the US set-up and offered him a U-23 spot.

Just a guess, but he might be there as the #3. They have Romero as well as Gonzalez, a '97 who has experience in the Salvadoran first division and long ties to their YNTs. Of course they may have a strong pitch to offer him, but he may not be cap-tied at the end of this competition.

Looks like we might have lost Efra. Honestly it’s probably better for his international career if he chooses Mexico. It is no doubt a loss for us but Efra has a better chance of making a Mexico roster in 2026 and 2030 than he does usa. USA has a lot more competition for his position in our youth pool than Mexico does so it really shouldn’t have been a hard decision. Wish him the best
