How of those who don’t switch don’t have interest from the other national team in question or haven’t quite made it to the full national team level for any of the countries they are eligible for?

We’ve had plenty of switches in either direction over the years. And it happens all the time with other teams as well, Morocco being a very good example of a team this applied too.

The US is such a diverse country and there are only so many youth team spots we can offer. There’s always guys who are going to be provisionally cap tied at the youth level. That by no case means we’ve lost the player forever. In this case the player in question hasn’t even been provisionally cap-tied.

One thing I will acknowledge -- it's rare for a player to do a one-time switch "up" in status.

There have been 13 one-time switches into the USMNT. Saief (Israel), Boyd (NZ) and Maund (T&T) moved up -- with 2 of those having sworn off their original NT and declined call-ups. You could argue that Johannsson switched up, but Iceland was in a good place at the time and about to qualify for the Euros and the WC.

The one-time switches out of the US set-up, other than to Mexico & Canada (which you could consider an equivalent) went to lower ranked sides such as Panama, Honduras, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Ethiopia, Guyana, Liberia). Subotic's move to Serbia stands out a little from the others.

The reality is that a developing player usually gets called into the full NT too quickly to be considered for the USMNT. A player needs to have a falling out or doesn't develop to the level needed to be open to a one-time switch.

To answer your question, I think it's true that a lot of those that don't switch don't have interest to switch. Thats obviously going to be true.

At the same time, I think there are a sizable percentage who don't know how their careers are going to turn out, and they are rightly advised to not make a switch when their career hasn't yet played out enough to see what their level will end up being.

The way youth recruiting works, there's a lot of runway to go back and forth before you are cap-tied. Once you are cap-tied, that runway narrows significantly. You have one switch left.

We have to make sure we recruit players before they have become provisionally cap-tied. The chances we can shift them once they are provisionally cap-tied are a lot smaller. That doesn't even begin to address the fact that with players that go to smaller nations that it's going to be a lot harder for us to find the pathway for that player to switch to our program. Chances are that a player like Morales will have a better chance to make each Bolivian youth team, and if he develops well, he'll be a Bolivian senior caliber player sooner than a USMNT player. We can't be reactive, we have to be proactive. The players who play for these smaller nations do so because the USA isn't offering them a spot or recruiting them well enough. They'd prefer to play for the USA.

Is the U20 qualifying for CONMEBOL also going to be their Olympic qualifying?

We don’t if Morales is going to be on Bolvia’s team or not, but I don’t expect Bolvia will qualify and he won’t really have any avenue to play with them for awhile anyways. Plenty of time to see where his game goes and if he continues to develop. He’s a long way from playing for the full Bolivian national team for the time being.

I’d be perfectly fine with the US U20s calling him up in January too. Obed Vargas for instance will probably be with Seattle as the Club World Cup is February 1-11. But does Morales pick a U20 camp over CONMEBOL qualifying?

With someone like Morales the main issue is going to be he’s going to unable to play in the U20 World Cup and probably the Olympics for the US if he plays in CONMEBOL qualifying. There’s not really a point in him switching unless the full national team is on the table at that point.

He plays in MLS. If he’s developing to the point where he looks like a future national team player no one is going to miss it.

But also these things are going to happen. This is how France loses so many players. We aren’t France, but the gap between us and a Bolivia or El Salvador is fairly wide. We’re going to lose some guys too and some of them are going to be good. There’s no foolproof way to avoid it.

In this case Varas and his staff should evaluate the guy and if they think he’s a good enough prospect, they should invite him to camp in January. But he may turn them down. Or they may think others in the pool are better and don’t want to bring him in for the sole purpose of blocking a Bolivia call up. Evaluation of youth talent is hard and even the best talent evaluators make mistakes all the time. What Varas and his staff think of Morales I have no idea.

Back in September, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) fielded two US-born dual nationals in U-20 Asian Cup qualifying.

Anthony Huang ('04) appeared in all four of their games. A Google search finds a LinkedIn profile that lists both AZ Barca Academy and the Taiwan U-20 national team. He apparently committed to play D2 college ball at Cal Poly Pomona, but was not listed on their roster for the 2022 season.

Benson Lin ('03) plays for Hang Yuen in the Taiwanese league. According to Transfermarkt he was born in North Carolina, but a quick Google search doesn't turn up any mention of him having played anywhere in the United States so it seems likely that he moved to Taiwan at an early age. He appeared in three of the four games and scored a goal.

DeCarlo Guerra '08 got a Guatemalan passport and this will enable him to play in the next CONCACAF U17 Championship. He was previously in USA U15 and U16 camps.

Fernando Alvarez is also US Eligible. Interesting position we could always use depth in, Left CB.

Was Alvarez ever called in by Mexico at U20 level? Looks like he's been with Colombia at least as far back as August.

Alexander Aguilar, Christopher Argueta, Raul Avalos, Jonathan Aguirre, Diego Vasquez and Diego Torres have been called up to the @laselecta_slv squad that will be competing @Concacaf U17 Championship in February.

    Congratulations!

I don't think they have released the complete roster. @ChuckMe92 tweeted that ES had a US camp recently, so there will probably be more.
