If my Great-Grandfather was Gotschee German but was born and lived in modern-day Slovenia but it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the time ... am I (or I guess my father) eligible for all four of those countries?
Anyone want to do a comparison between Luis Figo and CP? They do seem to be somewhat similar in positioning and impact on a team. I think Figo had better teams around him which definitely helped him. CP with a better team would only be more impactful, IMHO.
Hungarian citizenship would only be available if your father could prove he was ethnic Hungarian. Austrian citizenship may be possible. Slovenian is definitely available but as Slovenia has never been within the borders of any definition of Germany other than the Third Reich it's unlikely that his German heritage would count.
Maybe Milan makes some moves to fix some problems with the squad and CP does even better, almost Figo-esque, and becomes a Ballon D'Or candidate. It doesn't seem far fetched.
.Could he be one of the final nominees? Sure. The final nominee list isn't three people. If is conceivable for him to be nominated in the next 5 years? Sure. The bar is high, but not insurmountable. And Milan is the kind of club that can bubble up and win something. Lest we forget, Christian Pulisic did win trophies at his last two clubs. If he's the best player on a club that wins something over the next 5 years? Sure. Win the thing? No. The US women won the Olympics last year and didn't have a woman finish in the top 3 of the Ballon d'Or voting. They've only ever won it twice. Men's Ballon d'Or 2024 Nominees Jude Bellingham (England, Real Madrid) Hakan Çalhanoğlu (Turkey, Inter) Dani Carvajal (Spain, Real Madrid) Rúben Dias (Portugal, Manchester City) Artem Dovbyk (Ukraine, Dnipro / Girona / Roma) Phil Foden (England, Manchester City) Alejandro Grimaldo (Spain, Bayer Leverkusen) Erling Haaland (Norway, Manchester City) Mats Hummels (Germany, Borussia Dortmund) Harry Kane (England, Bayern Munich) Toni Kroos (Germany, Real Madrid) Ademola Lookman (Nigeria, Atalanta) Emiliano Martínez (Argentina, Aston Villa) Lautaro Martínez (Argentina, Inter ) Kylian Mbappé (France, Paris Saint-Germain / Real Madrid) Martin Ødegaard (Norway, Arsenal) Dani Olmo (Spain, Leipzig / Barcelona) Cole Palmer (England, Manchester City / Chelsea) Declan Rice (England, Arsenal) Rodri (Spain, Manchester City) Antonio Rüdiger (Germany, Real Madrid) Bukayo Saka (England, Arsenal) William Saliba (France, Arsenal) Federico Valverde (Uruguay, Real Madrid) Vinícius Júnior (Brazil, Real Madrid) Vitinha (Portugal, Paris Saint-Germain) Nico Williams (Spain, Athletic Club) Florian Wirtz (Germany, Bayer Leverkusen) Granit Xhaka (Switzerland, Bayer Leverkusen) Lamine Yamal (Spain, Barcelona)
I'm not talking about the men. I'm talking about the women. There's an assumption that the European leagues are in a similar place to NWSL instead of largely being one or two team leagues where a few stars rack up absurd stats they never could in a more balanced NWSL. So they ignore the Americans and then act surprised when the best players look different in international play. European Women's Leagues are more unbalanced than the men because there's usually only a couple teams even trying.
Lyon provisionally relegated to Ligue 2 amid financial struggles - ESPN I am struggling to find the words to describe how big of a deal this is......... This is arguably historically France's biggest club....... Is Ligue 1 about to collapse out of its own ass? Needless to say, Tessmann's Ligue 1 stop will be brief edit: "if their finances are in order by the end of the season". Morgan Freeman narration: "But their finances would not be in order by the end of the season"
Cole Campbell has the 8th fastest sprint, 36.08 km/h, in this season's B1. That's especially notable, given his limited playing time. For reference, Alphonso Davies is at 5th with a time of 36.21.
18 year old vs 24 year old... I'm thinking Cole Campbell could get more than 0.13 km/h faster over the next half dozen years
It all has to do with the collapse of their domestic tv deal and other shenanigans. They have a new tv deal (signed weeks before the 24/25 season), but clubs are digging themselves out of real difficulties. The new tv deal saved some of them. I saw this list the other day of 8 other clubs (after Bordeaux) that are in significant risk of bankruptcy. It didn't actually include Lyon. -Auxerre -Lens -Nantes -Stade Reims -Montpellier -Brest -Le Havre -Angers. Last I saw there were four clubs in good health. PSG, Monaco, Nice, and St. Etienne.
