I don't normally say this to you, but I 100% agree. regardless of who the Commander in Chief is or personal feelings, it's a pretty big deal and would be a great memory maker.
Thanks for explaining history to me, an historian. If only Braudel were alive to tell us how the retreat of the glaciers or some shit led to Weston McKennie awkwardly standing in the Oval Office on a field trip for work!
People are already interested in their visit. It spawned spin articles from the usual suspects. There are several interesting storylines, including that the President of Liberia’s son plays for our national team, was closer to the international action than his father, and apparently loathes politics. That’s pretty important to both American foreign policy and Liberian domestic politics. But yeah, you’re AN historian and the only things that you deem are relevant are relevant. You know what’s funny is that historians are notoriously bad at categorizing current events in light of history. Why? Future generations choose what they believe is and isn’t relevant to them, and “historians” of their time will warp and retcon events to suit their own belief systems.
I'm waiting for a comprehensive three volume overview on US Soccer and the United States National Team in the Age of Gregg Berhalter.
There's a difference between incident or trivia and history. Juventus visiting the white house is the former. I promise you that nobody is going to write a monograph about the fact that Tim Weah stood near Trump once.
Former USYNT goalkeeper sold to Tigres. Makes sense. Paes is good and Collodi appears to have beaten him out for the #2 job. According to Buzz, no other details of the deal are known at this time. FC Dallas Transfers Homegrown Goalkeeper Antonio Carrera to Tigres UANL | FC Dallas Carrera joined the FC Dallas youth system in 2014 at age 10 and moved up to the FC Dallas Academy two years later. Internationally, he has represented the United States at the U15, U17 and U20 levels. FC Dallas signed Carrera as its 33rd Homegrown player on Feb. 21, 2022
Luca Koleosho just scored an excellent goal to give Italy a 1-0 lead against Germany in the Euro U21 quarter-final.
Remember that Poch did talk to him, but he was noncommittal. That’s what prompted him saying that he wanted players that wanted to play here.
We have not missed out yet as he’s still free to play for whoever. He’s also coming off a not very good season in the Championship.
I'd love to see Weah in the Prem. Everton and Tottenham Monitoring Juventus Forward for Summer Move | OneFootball
Looks like Poch has drank the Kool Aide! I guess Poch did not read all the comments in this thread by the folks who think the game is defined by xG + xA. Malik, it's difficult to define him because what a player, no?" he said. "What a player that is showing this, all his talent and capacity. Because this type of player, the talent that he has shown with every single game and then with the capacity without ball, the work ethic in the way that he really is aggressive, he recovered a lot of balls. He's always trying to help the deep press, chasing back, playing in different positions. "He can appear like a No. 10 in training, between the lines, using the half space, but can be in the right or left side, wide. Or he can drop and play like a No. 8, No. 6. I think, 'What a talented player.' So pleased with him." https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/45565233/usa-pochettino-gold-cup-win-group-d
Nerds use xG and xA because they never developed the ability to ascertain talent with the eye. Those who grew up around a sport can walk onto a pitch/court/gym and tell who stands out. It’s not even worth having the debate as unless you’ve been in and around it, the context and variables stats will never account for simply aren’t understood.
I mean, you know that any serious team invests in and uses stats that are far nerdier than xG or xA, right? They have nerds on the payroll.
They sure do. Those clubs also use analytics as a tool to give them more data, in order to make better & more informed decisions. The data isn't a crutch for them, it's a tool, and one part of their decision making process. IOW they aren't fans who use stats as if they are playing fantasy sports, or a video game.
The misuse of stats is the issue. Musah has interest from West Ham. Mediaset: Premier League club make contact with Milan for Musah - the details
A lot of them outsource it. There's a company called PLAIER that uses AI. Plug a player's name into your team and they'll determine his potential impact.
Ok, so the original premise (nerds use stats because they don't understand the game) has been dropped. That's good. But still: the distinction between teams that use stats as a tool and fans that use stats as a crutch is far too neat. For one, teams routinely bolster their own internal analytics departments by hiring "fans" or buying their products. And when I see serious-minded fans using stats, I see them using "a tool to give them more data" in an effort to "make better and more informed decisions."
