I still adamantly believe that…… during the era…… if Dempsey went to Liverpool instead of Tottenham , have have been even even more if a legend
did Jermaine Jones, Fabian Johnson or Michael Bradley ever make bundesliga team of the year? Altidore and Bradley had best seasons ever in Holland by an American. Cardoso is basically having best season by an American in Spain.
Johnny is running away with the competition for best season in spain, thats a mountain and molehill comparison, putting it politely. His Betis campaign will be extremely difficult to top.
AJ broke Jozys scoring record in the Eredivisie. Tillman last year and this are overall better than MB90's 18G magical year. IIRC, Jermaine made a couple of team of the year lists in 2008 and was Buli.com 2nd team in 12' to '13.
ended up being a draw, but Betis and Johnny will need a LOT of help to get into the champions league with two games remaining. Still, Europa again.........thats a measure of a great season.
Altidore has AJ beat by any measure. 23 Eredivisie goals in Jozy's best season vs 17 Eredivisie goals in AJ's best season. 38 Eredivisie goals total for Jozy vs 29 Eredivisie goals total for AJ. 21 non-PK Eredivisie goals in Jozy's best season vs 13 non-PK Eredivisie goals in AJ's best season.
Pulisic is playing for a traditionally HUGE club, and he's the leader of that club at that. Italy is also a much more difficult league for offensive players given the tactical astuteness of every team.
One neat thing is to look back at the top 10 players in the Premier League in goals+assists the year that Dempsey finished 5th on that list: 1. Robin van Persie (Arsenal) - 39 2. Sergio Agüero (Manchester City) - 31 2. Wayne Rooney (Manchester Utd) - 31 4. Emmanuel Adebayor (Tottenham) - 28 5. Clint Dempsey (Fulham) - 23 6. David Silva (Manchester City) - 21 7. Gareth Bale (Tottenham) - 19 7. Juan Mata (Chelsea) 19 7. Yakubu (Blackburn) - 19 10. Nani (Manchester Utd) - 18 10. Rafael van der Vaart (Tottenham) - 18 Pulisic is also set to finish top 5 in Serie A in that category this season: 1. Mateo Retegui (Atalanta) - 31 2. Romelu Lukaku (Napoli) - 23 3. Moise Kean (Fiorentina) - 20 3. Ademola Lookman (Atalanta) - 20 3. Christian Pulisic (Milan) - 20 6. Marcus Thuram (Inter) - 18 7. Rafael Leão (Milan) - 16 7. Riccardo Orsolini (Bologna) - 16 9. Lautaro Martínez (Inter) - 15 9. Scott McTominay (Napoli) - 15
I think that given the lens of history, we'll view Pulisic's 2024/5 season as superior to that of Dempsey's best season at Fulham. He still has a couple of games to go. I view it that way anyway. And I view it as different than the goalkeeper seasons. Just apples and oranges. If people want to have the argument that its the best year ever for a USMNTer in Europe, I'm happy to listen to it. I realize I'm an old fuddy-duddy. When I was first really paying attention to the sport, AC Milan was the pinnacle. Those late 80's, early 90's AC Milan teams. Maybe I'm biased in this regard. A USMNTer doing what he's doing at AC Milan hits me in the feels. It hits differently than a player doing it for Fulham. No offense to Fulham, but you're not AC Milan. You're not even the biggest club in West London. Know your place. And yes, that matters to me. The pressure on Christian Pulisic is different than it was for Dempsey at Fulham. The spotlight on him is infinitely brighter. If they'd won that Coppa Italia, I don't think it would even be a discussion.
His G+A/90 rate is 40% lower and his npxG+xA/90 rate is 30% lower than last season. PSV’s xGD/90 with him on vs off is essentially flat.
I don’t at all, because I judge how individuals do based on what the individual did and how impressive that was based on the circumstances. Clint was playing tougher competition on a team with less help than Pulisic. As an individual Clint did more than Pulisic.
That is about as relevant as x = -b +|- Sqrt( b ^2 - 4ac ) / 2a The statistic that says it all: with Tillman, PSV has a winning percentage of 84 percent in the Eredivisie this season, without him the same number is 37.5 percent.
Its a tight debate, and one can argue either way. Its one of those fun message board debates. Christian Pulisic hits AC Milan milestone, on 'best American player ever' trajectory - NBC Sports Clint Dempsey, best two European seasons (all comps) 2011-12 (Fulham): 46 matches, 23 goals, 7 assists 2012-13 (Spurs): 43 matches, 12 goals, 7 assists Christian Pulisic, AC Milan, first two seasons (all comps) 2023-24: 50 matches, 14 goals, 11 assists 2024-25: 45 matches, 16 goals, 11 assists It’s an imperfect comparison in that it touches two eras, two different attacking roles, and different domestic leagues, but there’s no question it’s close at a minimum. Let's not forget that MIlan was playing in the Champions League. Dempsey's teams weren't. PUlisic has two more games to add to his goal contributions this season.
Yeah, I mean why use a stat that actually measures what a player did when you can use a stat that measures whether the team won or not.
