I grew up literally over the bridge from a barrio of LA and a school in Pasadena (Miur High School) that had a high concentration of kids from the projects, and subsequently had high violence. My high school, upper middle class and quite good, every year had several students using addresses that were in district even though those student lived out of district. Some were even notable members of sports teams.

Lived in Memphis for a few years, and worked right on the border of Mississippi. The thing that always cracked me up is that I had to exit the freeway in Mississippi and return back to Tennessee to get to work. But I also know how the two states, while similar in many respects, are also vastly different. One of the funniest moments I had living there was when I was teaching. Had a Black girl in my class from country Mississippi. A White girl from country Tennessee was enrolled in my class and sat next to the Black girl. White girl asked the Black some questions and there was some adjustment and getting to know each other. I was half listening mostly out of curiosity but also see if I would need to answer anything. Then one of my students from the 'hood in Memphis asked "Mr. Nutter, can you understand anything they are saying?" And I realized those two were were talking with a thick country drawl that nobody else could understand. :ROFLMAO:

The place you are talking about coaching, was that Collierville area?

Yes it was. I was actually quite happy there but I was still quite young and felt I needed to travel and the Service seemed like the most efficient way to make that happen. Thus started my far eastern and then European odyssey. I learned more about soccer in Japan and then in Europe (Germany) and I became a better coach but when I finally moved back to the 'States I chose a somewhat more rural location I think, due to my military experience, I simply felt uncomfortable around too many people and the "walled in" feeling of most cities gave me the screaming willies. I sometimes think that I should have moved near a big city where I had at least a chance to coach in something that would give me the chance to "win" something big but I decided that impacting the lives of the kids was what was really important to me so small towns are where I have stayed ever since.

I've always looked to live in places near nature (currently, I lift my window shade and get a clear, close view of the Rocky Mountains). Other than the team aspect of soccer, I know I like it because it is played on grass, a natural surface (and often in parks, which usually have bushes and trees).
