Thanks for the link. Brings up the question as to who will be the backup keeper: Jon or the new guy. And if those quotes from M. Ettore are not Franco-BS, looks like Joe may be in France for a while.
This article confirms my belief that Frank doesn't believe that Jon is ready to be a starting keeper. Otherwise, why spend the time and effort looking for another keeper? If Jon becomes the starter, what if he doesn't make the grade? Better to have competition from an established keeper (Jordan, Walker, etc.) rather than someone out of college...
I like the comment from the Lens GK trainer about Joe- "...it wasn't our intention to make an exotic choice." Joe Cannon, Exotic Choice. DougO
Depends on if Espen Baardsen wants to come back to the USA. If he gets signed and that's a big "if" will it deplete the MLS coffers? Also, despite being capped by Norway his US Citizen status won't count against the cap. However, I'm still going to say give Jon a chance. Then again, another local as a keeper would be a good sell.
I agree, I think we need to get a solid keeper (Like Walker) into the team. Even if we get Walker, I would still like to see Conway get the starting job and try to keep it. I think if there is enough pressure of him loosing the job, he may just come up big and be the next Joe.
I saw that and thought the same thing. Good ole Joe - exotic choice. An unexpected mixture of words and quite amusing.
Baardsen started the game which was Brian McBride's debut on loan to Everton and he was horrible. Basically the reason that they lost. But he was up against Robbie Keane who fired a hat trick for the win...maybe he would fare better in the MLS. Who knows?
I'm not sure that looking for another keeper with experience is a knock on Jon so much as needing someone a little more experienced than a keeper right out of college for a back up. If Jon was to be injured or red carded Frank would certainly want more depth than he currently has in that position.
But there are other positions where we need improvement as well and we don't really have the greatest luxury of being that far below the cap...I say address our other more immediate needs on the wings and up top...or a right back Once that is settled then we can have a 3rd keeper...unless Saunders is supposed to be a developmental player anyway...
