Is this the FIRS World Championship or the IIHF World Championship, or some new governing body?

Roller hockey people wanted to see this sport in the Olympics but it never will be until they can get one unified governing body to push it into the Games.

    Wednesday was a day off

Vítor Hugo, National Team Selector, speaks about his passion for Rink Roller Hockey
Vítor Hugo stopped playing at the age of 28. Behind he left a successful career, ranking as one of the best Portuguese players ever. Two and a half years ago he returned to the rinks, but now as National Team Selector. Since then a lot has changed in his life. There is less time for his family and his dentist surgery is in chaos. That’s the price he has to pay for his passion, Roller Hockey.

“António Livramento was my idol as a child” he says “and he had many characteristics in which I could see myself in”. He remembers him as a “unique player, the best hockey player ever and a great friend”.

Vìtor Hugo started playing hockey when he was five. He started playing in competitions when he was ten. He played for “Académica de Espinho” and at 17 he became a “F.C.Porto” player, where he played for many years. Although he feels special about F.C. Porto he says that he is impartial when he it comes to the National Team.

As a child the anxiety about skating was enormous, later as a player he felt great pressure, than as captain of the team he felt highly responsible, now as National Team Selector he says that the 80s and the 90s were “the best period of roller hockey. Back then, the Portuguese, Spanish and Italian championships were very strong. Nowadays hockey is more aggressive and less technical.”

Vítor Hugo was a true winner. He won all the titles he wished for: the European Championship- senior twice; the European Championship-junior once; the World Championship once. There are several moments of glory that remain unforgettable: moments in National Championships, European Championships and World Championships.

He also refers to some negative moments in his career, for example not winning some championships the team deserved to win. These are moments an athlete can never forget.

“We are here to win” Vítor Hugo says referring to the 36th Rink Hockey World Championship. He says his team consists of “Humble Workers” a mixture of experienced players and young ones. He believes in their skills and experience and regrets the absence of Filipe Gaidão. “This is a team with a mission spirit, a team that will accept whatever comes.” He also stresses that the spectators of Oliveira the Azeméis and the Stadium are the ideal ones, as well as the conditions that were found in this city. All support has been given to the team, support coming from the City Council and the sponsoring Company. If anything goes wrong it is not for lack of support and ideal conditions.

Interesting how those countries play rollerhockey...I do too, but any good hockey player in this country looks at roller hockey as something to do on the street...not as something to take seriously as far as organized sports. Any good hockey player plays ice hockey...cept for maybe the southern states.

How did Portugal ever go so into rollerhockey?

to play roller hockey you need a perfect arena, and a great floor, I try to starter a roller hockey league a few years ago, in Newark, but was turn down because it would make a lot of scratches in the basketball court

Ah we were talking about 2 different disciplines of roller hockey. Wasn't aware they still used quad-skates???

I guess I should call the discipline I'm more familiar with "Inline Hockey", and I guess it doesn't have as storied of a tradition that quad-hockey does.

Portugal leads the “World Champions” list.
Portugal, 14 times world title-holder, is the most awarded country in the 35 World Championships that have already taken place. In spite of having won the last title ten years ago, Portugal keeps the leadership of the World Winners Honour Group.

In the first 15 World Championships, between 1936 and 1962 Portugal won nine titles.
The other five were won in 1968 (Porto, Portugal), 1974 and 1982 (Lisbon, Portugal), 1991 (Porto) and1993 (Italy). Portugal was also Vice-World Champion for 10 times.

The countries that follow Portugal in the victory list are Spain, with ten victories, Argentina (5), Italy (4) and England (2).
