the last console iv had was my mommys and daddys NES.

Now i am finally thinking of getting an Xbox

    why?

    1. put a new HDD on it.200gb
1.5. put mod chip on it(i forgot this step)
    2. put all old school games/emulators, nes, supernintendo, sega, etc.
    3. put ton of mp3s on it
    4. put tons of music videos on it.
    5. put tons of divx/xvid movies on it
    6. use it as my tv dvd player/music player/everything player.
    7. setup a tvconsole in car and connect xbox to it to listen to music/videos while driving.

    oh the possibilities are endless.

has anyone done any cool stuff with xbox

are you serious? you can do all the to an xbox, couldn't you do that with a laptop as well? although I bet price for a top of the line laptop would be more than all the mods for the xbox.....

yeah a laptop you cant get full xbox gaming on.

    and costs a ton more.

xbox is just a lot easier to get all this to work.
like when you close a lappy, it goes to standby...

does anyone know how to "update" my CD-rom drive on my Xbox?

To make a long story short, I bought my XBOX when it first came out and the newwer games that contain alot of info (ie Grand theft auto) crash on my system.

The guys at the store claim that older xbox's have a hard time reading dual layered disks for games like this...

what I mean is that you don't want to take your laptop out of standby when you close the lid if you're running from the battery, because you would be wasting battery time.

I have a laptop (Apple Powerbook) but will definitely buy the Xbox 2 this Xmas for all the reasons you mentioned. I don't own a DVD recorder so it will be nice to be able to record stuff off TV, copy games onto the hard drive etc. And online gaming through it's wifi setup as well.

Oh, and I'll be putting a 500gb drive in it :)

Of all the things Microsoft have done in recent years their vision of a media hub is the most appealing.
