What is it? I was under the impression a little while ago that we might be able to get him for free. Like I've said before, we need depth at the back, and he's got experience. As long as he can stay fit, he would be a good player to have. Same as Pavon. Speaking of Pavon: he's definitely out of contract, so it would be nice to have him in our squad. http://www.dailynews.com/sports/ci_7982284
Even considering our current strengths and weaknesses, I'd much rather have Xavier. The dude was a wall last year.
So he has dyed hair...big deal. You're going to judge him on that? The guy, along with Cannon, was the saving grace of that team last year. They'd have surrendered eight a game.
I'm with Honore - I've never really got the Xavier thing. I think he made a few nice passes, and I think he knows how to get away with a few more cynical fouls per game than the average MLS back, ....but for the $$$ I'd rather have a (couple of!) young, hungry American player who's looking to prove himself.
No. He's a douche, and not very good. A Lalasian reject. A fright wig worn by an idiot, full of sound and fury blah blah. Actually he could be a cool guy for all I know but the game seems to have found him out. He was awful or disinterested or both in the games I saw. And didn't they drop Tryone Mrashall to get him? He's far too L.A. Far to Lalas.
I'm Portuguese, I'm a Galaxy hater, but I would love for him to take the trip up north and play for at least a year.
Though a very good player, I don't believe he's a good fit. We already have two very competent center backs. A lot of money is already being spent of defense. We need depth, but maybe not an expensive starter. Now if he was ready to renegotiate salary, he could become a good fit, but I don't see that happening.
Oh definitely. I wouldn't want him anywhere near SJ for his current salary. But if they waive him, can't we renegotiate stuff?
Only saw him play a few times last year. He seemed above average for MLS, but nothing special. I'd take probably a dozen MLS center-backs before him - including Conrad, Robinson, Parkhurst, Goodson, Curtin and two guys on this new team in San Jose - Garcia, and Cochrane. I think all those guys and likely more - are better than Xavier. From what I saw he appeared to be good at stopping crosses from getting into the box, but he didn't seem that fast. I'd suspect a quick forward, a well timed run and a good though ball would be his undoing.
I completely agree. But all those guys are under contract with other clubs, and we simply have no more bargaining chips. I'm not talking about paying for Xavier. No Quakes exec in their right mind would do that. But if we can sign him for free and with discounted wages why not?
Given that we just gave up the #1 draft pick for Garcia and our first allocation pick was Cochrane, I simply don't see FY and Co. spending more big bucks in the center back area. I think if we're going to see veteran signings, they will be in goal-scoring positions. YMMV
Anyone who wants Xavier should answer the following questions: 1. Is he better than either Cochrane or Garcia? 2. Will having him make us better in three years than not? 3. Is there any reason to take him other than the fact that we'll have our very own EuroStar(TM) to brag about on BigSoccer?
Re: Xavier's status w/LA - OT Not to get too far astray, but my wife and I had our wedding at a place that I think was called "Tamar Deli" or "Tamar Restaurant" (or some variation of those) on E Santa Clara St., in the heart of the Portuguese business district. A guy named George Tamar owned the place and he let us use the back patio area, then he catered the dinner in his restaurant. It was great fun. Now, back to our scheduled programming.
Re: Xavier's status w/LA - OT Assuming we don't pick up Xavier, how is George Tamar as a center back?
Tamar was my favorite restaurant growing up. Now when I'm in town and visit Little Portugal, I've been going to Sousa's, which is next door. In any case, I thought that Xavier was a damn good fullback for the Galaxy last year. I caught every game of the Superliga last year, for example, and he and Cannon were pretty much the only reason the Gals were able to get to the final and take it to penalities to a much superior Pachuca club. I would want to talk to him about the Euro 2000 semi-final though.
Re: Xavier's status w/LA - OT I demand you change the name to "Little Lisbon" or I will personally lead a drive to recall your posting privileges!
Xavier was probably great in his prime and seems like an awesome guy but he sucked last year. He is sooooo slow...
Xavier is a stud. I'd love to have him & Califf as the centerbacks Cochrane on the right & Garcia on the left and we'd be in buisness.
