This is a tough one. Go see X at the 9:30 or go see DC United at RFK.

Damn. Not coming anywhere near me. I saw them over a decade ago at First Avenue in Minneapolis, when they had ... that dude from The Blasters (Dave Alvin?) on guitar. A good show, but I'd like to see them with Billy Zoom, too.

Seeing them with Billy Zoom, I can't wait.

Mike - this was a no brainer for me. See the band I've absolutely loved for the last 20 years that I have never seen live and may never get to see live again or go see a crap soccer team that I can also see next week.

Could ya do both. I bet tehre will be an opener. X doesn't seem like a band that would go on that early. Plus the train is right at RFK. Then again I have no idea where the 930 is.

Not a bad idea. Hmm, in fact, that's a great idea. The 9:30 Club was at 930 F Street NW (hence the name). They moved to 815 V Street NW. http://www.930.com

All that's left of the original building is the facade. It's weird going to Gordon Biersch, which is on the corner of 9th and F, and see the location of the 9:30, a place where lots of my brain cells bravely sacrificed themselves in my pursuit to get wasted while watching punk bands.

I'm trying to remember some of the acts I saw at the 9:30. Let's see, Living Color, TMBG (when Put Your Hand Inside the Puppet Head was a new song), Nitzer Ebb, Einstuertzende Neubaten, The Plasmatics, The Slickee Boys, The Def Tones, 9353, Bad Brains, wow, lots and lots of stuff.

I considered doing both - the doors don't open until 9 and there is an opening act. But, we're going out to dinner with friends before the show, instead.

Ok - original lineup - Billy Zoom, DJ Bonebrake, John Doe and Excene Cervenka.

They only played songs from their first four albums:

Los Angeles, Wild Gift, More Fun in the World and Under the Big Black Sun. I heard every song I wanted to hear, except maybe Adult Books. They played the songs straight - no re-interpretation. That's a good thing and a bad thing. I'd have to loved for them to mess around a bit, but I think they were trying to do things the way they did when Zoom was still a band member and not sound like the Dave Alvin era. Anyway, the band was tight and professional.

Zoom was absolutely incredible. He's got to be one the best guitarists out there. He sounds like two guys and he makes it look as easy as tying your shoes. They played about 90 minutes, I'd guess.

The audience was completely into it. I started out on the balcony and I could the see the people below me undulating with the music. There was some moshing and crowd surfing going on. After the set was about over, I just had to get to the stage and pushed my way through. I took advantages of openings made by the moshers to propel myself forward and got to very front, dead center. The sound was terrible being so close, but I like to do that for a little while at shows.

My husband, who's never really liked them much, came out talking about how great a show it was. I think he expected them to sound sort of Ramone-like or something. I think there are many people who don't realize that these were punks who were some of the best musicians going at the time.
