BECKHAM'S PICK: The biggest soccer player on the planet these days
-- sorry, Pele -- is English midfielder David Beckham, the namesake
of the hit comedy "Bend It Like Beckham." He was in Southern
California last week to see the Home Depot Center and take part in a
clinic on one of 125-acre facility's training fields.

"I'm a football fan," he told the Los Angeles Times. "Whether it's
English football or European football or world football or women's
    football, it doesn't matter. ...

"I've always said that I support women's football. People have asked
me what I'll do when I finish playing. I want to have soccer schools,
for boys and girls. Every time I've said that, people have always
turned around to me and said, 'Girls and women? Why?' But I think
it's important that everyone enjoys the sport, not just men. They
    think it's a macho sport. It's not.

"Women's football in England and in Europe will never get the support
that it's got in America. It's going to be hard. It's never going to
be as big as it is over here. It could be. It could be. I'd love it
    to be."

While in Carson, Beckham met four U.S. players -- Joy Fawcett,
Kristine Lilly, Shannon MacMillan and Aly Wagner -- and talk turned
to his choice to win the Women's World Cup final in October.

    The United States, of course.

"You're the strongest team," he told them.

Wagner, the Times reported, wanted to know more. "Is the San Diego
Spirit your favorite WUSA team?" the Spirit midfielder asked.

Beckham grinned. "Of course it is," he said.

Becks, Becks, Becks. Just as I was gaining more respect for you for supporting all facets of the Beautiful Game, you have to go and proclaim your support for the Spiritless. I realize you were just kissing their butt to be chivalrous because you were talking to them face to face but come on!!! Show a little common descency. Children may read your comments for goodness sake!!!

I agree. I would be surprised if he knew who he was talking to.
