The WPSL, a US-based amateur league, is expanding its brand by beginning a new, entirely separate league within Canada that they hope to turn into a professional league in 2-5 years.

There's already some controversy at it apparently sounded like the league initially began testing the waters as a fully pro league, and only recently scaled back to being amateur with future pro ambitions. Still, it's got people talking, which is good as it shows the interest is there.

WPSL already has a history of including the occasional Canadian team, though usually no more than 1 or 2 at a time. There are no teams currently confirmed for the league, but the current lone Canadain WPSL team (FC Berlin) is an obvious first choice, and the league says it has the interest to welcome teams in all major Canadian cities. The aim is to launch with 16 teams, split into east and west conferences.

The league will be noticeable different than its US parent league in that it will operate as a centralized league (apparently more like other pro soccer leagues) than with the membership model most amateur leagues use.

There's been talk for a long time of a women's CPL, but it hasn't seemed to progress very far, and now WPSL is getting the jump. It'll be interesting seeing how WoSo in Canada develops over the next few years!
