Just think of it, when he is actually playing against his peers, rather than people bigger than him, wow he will simply demolish the MLS.

No he won't because if he is THAT good, he will not be playing in MLS at 20. Call it a hunch.

Why do I have a feeling you have pictures of jizz-stained Adu pictures strewn out around your room? Get a grip man, at your rate, you've posted 75% of your post to the kid...I think it's time to find out what fresh air smells like.

No, not illegal, just not fiscally viable for MLS. If Adu turns out to be what everyone expects him to be, by the age of 20 or sooner, clubs will be trying to throw him all kinds of obscene money to jump the pond. MLS will not be in a position to compete.

Enjoy watching him play in MLS while you can. I know I will.

Why do I get the feeling that by the time Freddy is 20, he will have had major surgery on both his ankles, and be out 45% of every season?

If not, he will definately be in Europe. He will be the US version of Michel Owen.

Now wait just a minute here. We don't know how much of an effect Freddy will have on the American public. This is the most prosperous nation in the world. By the time Freddy is 18 it looks like MLS could feature the likes of Beckham, Sol Campbell, and others who want to "conquer" America. Now I agree, odds are that he is going to leave for Europe. But when Freddy is 20, we just don't know what kind of shape MLS will be in. That's 6 YEARS from now! The NHL had Wayne Gretzky, the NBA had MJ, we now have Freddy. If the sky is the limit with this kid, then how do you know what the situation will be with MLS? I think that if this sport takes off we might be able to afford keeping him here.

    How good will he be? Until the kid proves it, he's just another phenom. {Cough} Lebron {Cough}

You mean hyped to holy hell, then falling short of expectations?

FYI, in case you haven't noticed, LeBron James is averaging close to a double/double for a losing team.

Carmelo Anthony is doing the same for a team that was borderline BAD last year but 12-6 so far this year.

Phenoms who haven't proven themselves? Not that you could tell so far.

So what makes you think this kid is not going to have a similar effect?

On the financial side, stadium concessionaires have already increased orders for games when Freddie and friends come to town next year.

Yeah, this kid WILL have a major impact in more ways than one!!! Bet on it.

I like your optimism and I would love it if all this comes to pass. However, I doubt it. Call me a realist ;-)

No, more like a serious talent who's constantly injured on a team that gives him no service.

The reason anyone of us are excited about Freddy Adu in MLS is because this league is in need of some magic. The promise is there and the potential is there and if the moon and stars align I would literally faint if this scenario ever happens.

After a season in MLS Freddy Adu has finally been called for the USMNT for the World Cup and in qualifiers showed skills that overshadowed his MLS highlight reels. In his first WC game Adu gets on in the 60'th minute vs. Brazil with the USA down 1-0 from the half. Adu gets the ball and shows moves the likes of which people are not accustomed to seeing blowing past Brazilian defenders like a knife through butter drawing all the attention just as he passes it off to an unmarked Landon Donovan. THe entire time flashbulbs are going off like a fireworks display show all to capture the 16 year old Adu in action...

Hey man one can dream right? I would freak out the day I know the USA has arrived as one of the real true football powers of the world. I'd gleam just thinking about Brazil, Argentina, or England talking about how they respect not just Adu but the entire team. After that happens then I can finally drop soccer and concentrate on watching another sport, Rugby, which I know jack about...

I know this is a soccer board, but I need to jump on the basketball topic for a moment. Lebron has silenced all credible critics with his NBA performance. He is doing far better than most people, including me, ever thought he could do. He is playing better than Kobe "Some People Think He Would Be The Next Jordan If He Weren't A Rapist" Bryant did in his rookie season, with less of a team to support him.

And will Freddy draw fans? I don't give a flying fig about basketball anymore, and I have tuned in to four games this season. All four featured Lebron.

    Hope

I cannot tell you how many kids I have seen over the years that look like they are going to be unbelieveable and then fade into the wood work. At this point it is years too early to tell. We can only hope.

In the meatime MLS need to go after more of these youngsters. Watching a bunch of 30 something former greats is boring.
