Would USA not qualifying for World Cup 2018 be more shocking than Netherlands not qualifying for Euro 2016? If USA doesn't qualify, how big a difference does it make in how shocking it is whether we are eliminated in the Semifinals, Hexagonal, or interconfederational playoff?

It's a comparable form of shock.

"Sky still falling? O Ye of Little Faith in Our Savior, Jurgen. It is not that the sky is falling, it is that Jurgen is so mighty that he raises the ground to the sky! " ZeesMad.

Holland's collapse is a huge disappointment there and is noticed nearly world wide, especially in Europe. US missing would be noticed here and Mexico for the most part. Europeans might give a 'hmm, interesting'.

Yea, I think it would be similarly shocking. I couldn't believe that Holland failed to qualify for the Euros. Nonetheless, given how the mainstream media here gives two **** about soccer, I'd say that the shock is greater for Holland.

I don't know about shocking, but I sure as hell would be a lot more upset.

It'd be way more shocking historically, getting eliminated from this group. When it came out, it was received with celebration by those just focusing on the U.S. winning as many games as possible, and a free pass from those who wanted Jurgen to be held accountable finally sooner rather than later.

And it would be far more catastrophic from an inter-program standpoint because the Netherlands can regroup and gain entrance to a more important tourney in 2 years. The U.S. would be waiting 6 years for possibility of by far the biggest tourney they could play in. All the while players in the system would be going through the motions knowing there is no light at the end of the tunnel and dual nationals who grew up in the States, the more important sect from a quantity and average commitment standpoint, would be more apt to fly the coop, making it even harder to qualify the next time around. All this would feed the conversation about the inferiority, irrelevance, and femininity of the sport in this country. Netherlands is not nearly as unstable.

We're sitting on four points with two home games and a weak away game still to play.

And we're consistently playing our worst football in over 20 years.

The idea that the modern USMNT wouldn't qualify for the World Cup out of CONCACAF used to be unimaginable to me. Now, it's entirely plausible. And, quite shocking.

I don't give a crap about The Netherlands or the Euros.

You say 4 points, in 3 games, like that's a good thing. Puts us well down into 3rd place, in an awful group. Even if we get out of this one, that, nor the GC performance, foretells comfort as far as getting out of the Hex, barring a managerial change of course.

Now THAT'S the voice of reason weighing in.

I we don't win on Yuesday things will start to bleak

We should win on Tuesday if we don't that means the team is completely dysfucntional and Klinsmann needs to go.

If fate has anything to do with it, it'll be ultimately in Mexico's hands to see us through to 2018 (sometime in the fairyland future and the Hex we barely make).

Will they step off the gas?

Klinsmann and Gulati both already need to go.

We are in the weakest group... After the first leg, by the way things stand now, we should be going home. It's been time for a change.

We all should seriously accept that under Klinsmann, there is a very likely chance we don't make it to the World Cup.

It'd be more shocking. That's because CONCACAF qualifying is set up to allow the cream to rise to the top via multiple group stages. Playing more games favors the big teams, because there's more room for error for the favorites while the underdogs have to pull off more upsets to qualify.

If we lose on Tuesday, it makes very little difference what is done with Klinsmann. The base, including myself, and the player pool, will be disenchanted, and barely care what happens the next 4-6 years. Our #1 goal by far would be all but shattered. The amount of damage Klinsmann could do beyond that is limited. He NEEDS to be fired regardless of what happens on Tuesday. I am aware what Gulati has said publicly, but all I can hope is that's the dreaded vote of confidence, which he's just supplying so the manager he's stuck with in the interim doesn't tank and players still possibly buy whatever crap Doofy Lame Duck is selling.
