Caniggia Mulling MLS Spring Move 15/02/03

Pending any contract extension offers from Rangers, Claudio Caniggia may just find himself in MLS when the season begins in April.

The Argentine veteran is eagerly waiting for a decision on his Ibrox future from coach Alex McLeish.

”I would like to get my future sorted out by March," Caniggia told the Daily Record. "I spoke with the manager and he told me he has to wait until the end of the season, but it is very difficult for a player to wait until the end of May.”

"It would be beautiful to stay with Rangers, but I can’t wait and hope that they will give me a contract."

"I still feel well and I believe I can play for another couple of years,” he continued. “I might choose America - I have offers to go over there so I will think about that."

Sorry if this news has already been discussed. Would he be a max salary player?

Ever since he scored that great goal in US 94....the one of the Maradona pass and he just curved right into the upper corner....Ive been a big fan of Claudio Cannigia...I think it would be great for the league....Does anyone know where he would end up???

You need to ask where an aging prima donna wishing to end his career in MLS is going to end up?

Hudson went to scout Rangers players much earlier in the offseason. If Cannigia really did have an offer from MLS, it would likely be from DC United. But since then United has filled it's foreign spots and used all of its cap space for a high salaried player, so I doubt that it would still have an offer on the table.

If he were to end up in MLS next season, I'd expect to see him in either Dallas (who may have the cap space) or LA (who do not have a salary cap). But frankly, I do not think there is an offer. He's using this to try to leverage an earlier Rangers offer. As this will definitely be his last contract at a top European club, he's desperate to get a contract ASAP.

I don't know, it sounds like Caniggia is fishing.

I occasionally watch Rangers on FSW. I really don't think he's any more than a slow footed poacher at this point. Most of his goals are pure poacher. I'd hope to get a little more flair and creativity for my foreign stars.

All the more reason the Metros should get him.

And let's not forget that he received a red card at the World Cup from the bench.

Dtron is absolutely correct. In fact, MLS (one of the press officers) issued a statement that basically said: MLS has made no offer to Cannigia and the league has had no discussions or contact with him. Maybe an individual team has. Frankly, I think he's talking about Mexico (which sounds strange to us except some Europeans talk about "America" and they're really referring to the "New World" ie: North America). Cannigia would be a draw for some Mexican teams.

As for United--absolutely not. We need a D-mid or a target man. He may be a poacher but I think Stewart would be better than CC. He would fit in with Dallas well. LA doesn't have anything close to the cap room. KC might have been able to acquire him if they hadn't acquired Wolff.

But all this is just fishing for offers. It's real similar to what Berhalter and Joe Max Moore did when trying to get European teams to pony up: "I'm considering my multiple offers from MLS...."
