I'm puzzled why the Revs didn't pick him up after NY discarded him. Perhaps not as a starter but couldn't he have added midfield depth and a useful attacking option. Any insights?

If you ask me, you can have him. This is quite a comedown from Nowak.

I watched Andy Williams play against DC last night. I can't say he's a great sparkplug to the offense. He's good, but he's no Kyle Martino. I think the Revs need someone better than Williams.

By the way, is there another offensive midfielder like Martino in the league? He does what Valderamma used to do: make himself available for passes, expect the offense to run through him, and deliver quick passes to move the offense forward. I hope he doesn't get hacked to death before the season ends.

I agree. I think he would have been helpful atleast until we could find a better option.

As AW's former apologist, I eventually had to admit that SN didn't want him. I suspect from listening to people better informed than myself that it had less to do with his ability than with interpersonal/team cohesion issues. I have no idea what these might be, and suspect that AW has his own side to the story, but nevertheless, knew that we would never see him again as a Rev.

The comparison wih Nowak is obviously unfair. How many players compare favorably with Nowak? It's also too early to judge his contribution to Fire 2003, leave alone that he's being played at forward, which is not his best position.

Still, it's now or never for AW in MLS - it's in his best interest to fix whatever caused problems with the other teams he's played on.

AW would have looked as lost and useless as Shalrie Joseph - with out the excuse of his first MLS minutes playing out of his natural position.

not to say AW is all bad, just that he wouldn't have been the ball winning game changer needed to change anything in the crew game.

    hope he likes chicago.

    ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Andy Williams will outlast his welcome in Chicago soon just like he has in virtually every other MLS city!!!!!!!!! Drop the Andy Williams worship! I predict he will be playing in another MLS or A-League city in 2004.

An interesting question, but I think the answer is a pretty clear no, especially since the midfield struggled as much defensively as offensively on Saturday, and that was never Andy's strong suit. That's probably a big chunk of why he always wears out his welcome.

There are two sides to this question:

In the world of objective data and capabilities, yes, I think AW's creativity would have helped the team on Saturday. (But then again so would the team playing to it's capabilities.)

In the real world of people and interdependencies and relations, no, AW is not the right person to be our creative midfielder. We need better than he is and we should get it...we had it in Nowak. Once that decision was made, it makes no sense to get him back here, just for a stopgap measure. Go with what you got while you go get what you really need.
