Results of those games: Blackburn 2–2 Walsall (Blackburn win 5–4 on penalties) Newcastle 3-3 Everton (Everton win 3–2 on penalties) Crystal Palace 3–0 Coventry Liverpool 3–1 Southampton It was a day of upsets and wild affairs. Both Walsall and Everton scored own-goals in extra time and came back to tie. … and what a comeback by the Blades against Leeds! But the scenes afterwards were disgraceful to say the least.
Draw for the next round: Aston Villa v Preston North End Burnley v Manchester United Liverpool v Ipswich Blackburn v Rotherham Wigan v Fulham Sheffield United v Sunderland Crystal Palace v Oldham Chelsea v Everton
The WC is looking very interesting this year. Lots of Premiership teams dropping out (only 8 left!) and plenty of lower league teams in with a chance of winning it. I'd like to see Everton win the cup this year.
Funny as it may sound coming from a well known Red Devil hater like me I wouldn't actually mind seeing Man United win the Worthington Cup this year. It would probably be deemed a greater insult than not winning anything at all!! When they don't win anything they can hide behind their manager and say it was just bad luck or what have you, but if they won this then they couldn't and they'd finally just have to face facts and realize they aren't good enough to win anything else! Subversion is sweet stuff.
Quarter finals start today Man U v Chelsea Wigan v Blackburn Sheff Utd v Crystal Palace Villa v Liverpool is tomorrow.
Sheffield United 3-1 Crystal Palace Manchester United 1-0 Chelsea Wigan Athletic 0-2 Blackburn Rovers
Darn. I hate to say this, but after Gerrard netted the third and made it 3-1, I turned it off. (Didn't want to tie up the phone line) I was both pleasantly surprised and saddened when I found out that Villa had equalized, but unfortunately fallen to the late winner in injury time. This looked like Villa's best route into Europe, as they've looked very mediocre in the league. They currently stand 15th. That's not going to get the job done. Another disappointment in a season full og them. Here's hoping that we can pick it up against Chelsea on the weekend and maybe make another run through the Cup starting against Blackburn in January. Rats.
SEMIFINAL, SECOND LEG Liverpool 2-0 Sheffield United (AET) LIVERPOOL advance, 3-2 on aggregate An early goal from El Hadji Diouf sent the Reds on the way to Cardiff, and Michael Owen added one in extra time for good measure. Liverpool will face the winner of: Blackburn Rovers v. Manchester United - Tomorrow night The first leg was a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.
Final score Blackburn Rovers 1-3 Manchester United Manchester United win on aggregate, 4-2 Liverpool vs. Manchester United in the final "Worthless" Cup?
come on united against the scum in my backyard lets have it! cant wait for this one ,imagine this united liverpool and cardiff city soul crew all in the same city scarey pickpockets and prostitutes will have a field day should be a good day out
I've almost 24 hours to ponder it and let it sink in...and once again I can only say... Bring. It. On. It's gonna be f'ing great.
I think 1987 was the last time two of the top teams met in the final. Arsenal 2 Liverpool 1 if I remember correctly.
I apologize if the following question has already been addressed. If Liverpool loses tomorrow and Arsenal ends up playing in the Champions League this fall (as expected), will Liverpool be given the spot for the UEFA Cup that is reserved for the Worthington Cup winner?
