Seeing the top 10 victories, I thought I'd ask about the matches we'd rather not think about, so draws and losses apply here and victories that should've been way larger apply here. I can only do #1 because it's all that springs to mind. 1. No contest, '98 WC, loss to Iran 2-1
1985 home loss to ElSalvador which put us out of WC '86. WC 1998 loss to Germany. '01 loss to Honduras. The 5-1 loss to Czechoslovakia in WC '90. The '97 US Cup-spankings by Mexico and a Danish B team. 1977-getting spanked by Canada for the right to advance to the Hex.Their NASLers kicked our NASLers asses. Others?
USA 1-3 Poland in '02 is a videotape that is buried deep in my closet back home, never to be seen again. That loss by itself allows people to doubt the growth of US Soccer.
USA 2:3 Honduras (World Cup 2002 Qualifying) Costa Rica 2:0 USA (World Cup 2002 Qualifying) The first two US NT games I ever saw.
That was to Costa Rica. I saw it on Spanish language TV. Horrible, horrible day: but in retrospect, it would be the last time I'd see the U.S. eliminated during WC qualifying. And that was almost 20 years ago. That loss, coming right as the NASL was folding, marked the nadir from which US Soccer has been climbing out of ever since. The loss against the Danes was bad--in an empty Rose Bowl in the pouring rain--but it was just a friendly and Sampson was trying some new faces. Iran in WC 98 was a low point too, no doubt. Although IIRC we opened that game strong, w/ Reyna hitting the post. One or two different bounces and we might have won that game.
I have to agree with the fact that it was one of the worst US MNT games I've seen, regardless of field conditions. Did you see the US v Ireland in the build up to WC 2002, same conditions, beautiful football. US v Panama, different story.
the fucq? was it a friendly? for me, most boring was recent game vs jamaica... worst loss? vs iran in WC98
The worst game I can remember in recent history was the Haiti game in the Orange Bowl last January(?). Although, it was the first time HDNet showed a MNT game in HD so that was remarkable. It was the most brilliant looking pitiful football I've ever seen us play
That was a bad one but i really don't count friendlies. For me the loss to Iran in the World Cup left me gutted. The draw at the Office vs. Jamacia this year was terrible as well. Thats really all i can think of off the top of my head at this hour and neither is a new one..perhaps that is a good thing huh.
I go with Team Brazil in Nineteen Ninety. Although the abovementioned is adequacy, Team U.S.A. approached match. We held stronger opponent at bay. Team U.S.A. looked for first goal. Then broken bone with goal conceded. I thought. That was a well plan not rewarded. This step showed. Team U.S.A. not well liked at status.
August 6, 1948 USA 0, Norway 11 (Oslo, Norway) May 30, 1928 USA 2, Argentina 11 (Amsterdam, Holland) February 21, 1991 USA 0, Bermuda 1 (Hampton, Bermuda)
the loss to Iran put me in a funk for days, the only thing that got me out of it was that i put money on Holland to win it and they had a pretty good run. All of france for the US was bad, but nothing was worse than watching Regis try and chase down some Iranian on his way to score. Ugh---and now you see the Asian boards and they still brag about it.
NASL Fan: If you remember that game, and Gawd, I wish I could forget it!, you probably remember a game the US played two weeks later on June 16, 1985 vs. England. 0-5. A real mess! That game, too, was shown on the old SIN network (now Univision) because it had been contractually arranged before the WCQ elimination match vs. CR. What I don't remember is if the game was at the Rose Bowl or the LA Coliseum.
