Right again as we have nothing to talk about for the next couple of months. Was just wondering if people would like to put forward their worst ever Irish players for every position to make up a side. My only rule is that tho some players may have had bad games for us (ie Staunton, Harte and O'Shea have all been awful at left back and yet have played well too) that each player be looked at over his whole career b4 being put down heres my nominations GK- Gerry Payton, Nicky Colgan FB- Curtis Fleming, Chris Morris CB- Paul Butler (worst game ive ever seen for ireland v Croatia), Alan Kernaghan (tho was great v Denmark, what happened after) CM- Gary Waddock, Alan McGoldrick, Wingers- Alan Moore, Keith O'Neill (cant forgive him for not marking up v Macedonia) Strikers- Bernie Slaven, Alan Lee (harsh maybe but has looked outa his depth) They are just the players i can think of now off the top my head was wondering if others could add to this list?
Jon Macken has to be included. Also Jim Goodwin, who made his debut at CB against Finland in 2002 just after moving from Celtic reserves to Stockport, and hasn't been heard from since (unless he was called up for the London tournament...that in itself is a black mark on any player's record). Father Ted or Samarkand could probably give us some older examples. I don't think Curtis Fleming really deserves to be nominated though.
Some good ones already listed, heres a few more gems: Liam O'Brien Alan Kernaghan Tommy Coyne Liam Daish and dare I say it....Eamonn Dunphy?
Yes, several caps. Played against Romania in Bucharest, mabye? The night Roy Keane missed a penalty. Certainly played against Wales in a friendly in the rain in Wrexham. First match I ever listened to live online. 0-0 draw. Miserable.
Dunphy has always said he was a journeyman pro. just as well he became the best journalist this country has produced and ghost wrote The Lgends Autobiography...
Dear Lord. You believe that? EDIT: I just realised what an appropriate thread Dunphy's journalism skills came up in.
dead right his first book "only a game" (isnt that the title?)is considered by many to be the best football book ever written and he seems to have a good knack of calling it right.....m smith...jack charlton....the health service.....etc and the piece he wrote about plank kenny is like gold....i would pay good money to get my hands on that article as he says himself..."if knitting is your game then......." but he was a ******** football player
you mean that other journalist that everbody talked about...like who? maybe in dublin 4 life looks so rosy and nice
