http://classicfilm.about.com/library/weekly/aa041998.htm?once=true& Awesome list of movies.I've got about 75 WWII flicks on DVD and over 60 books that are also WWII related. Any other WWII freaks out there? PEACE
I find it interesting, but I'm nowhere near as involved as you. That's a good list, but it only seems to include movies before 1970, which leaves out the likes of Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan (not a best of, but a WW2 movie nonetheless) and Conspiracy which is an HBO movie with Kenneth Brannaugh (sp) that was fascinating. And where is Stallon'e soccer masterpiece, Victory? (kidding). I thought Guns of Navarone was good, but not quite as good as it was made out to be. Reading the capsules, there are a lot of movies on there I'd like to see. Stalag 17 is among my favorite movies ("I believe it....I believe it...") and Von Ryan's Express- if you can bear Sinatra- was an enjoyable film. The Great Escape and The Dirty Dozen are both all time classics, if not the most believable of movies. Of the books I have (< 10), D-Day and Citizen Soldiers by Ambrose are enjoyable non-fiction, Rise and Fall of the 3rd Reich stand alone, and I just finished Cryptonomicon by Stephenson which is a pretty interesting book, half about WW2 and half in the current day.
Baked, Have you seen many WWII movies dealing with it from a perspective other than American? I just glanced at the list, but I only saw Hollywood stuff. There've been some great Euro films about the war. As for books, how'd you do with "Gravity's Rainbow?"
