Here is another Platini one from the 1985 Super Cup game:

I think it is more equivalent in terms of role (playmaker rather than AM) to this:

    Or perhaps this:

While Zico more the advanced midfielder/forward or advanced playmaker if you like (this game vs Liverpool too being a trademark Zico playmaking performance, but from 'in the hole' more than truly as midfielder I think, in the 4-2-3-1 or 4-2-1-3 formation of Flamengo):

Ajax wasn't so much a high possession team in 66/67 vs Liverpool.

Netherlands 2012 and Switzerland 2019 in particular seem a big stretch to me.

Peak-CR7 with goals (helped by excellent passes to be fair) vs Sweden in Play-Off qualifying:

Peak Cruyff vs Sweden in World Cup (with several big chances created):

I'd say, on the contrary, Cruyff was more versatile in respect of being very effective playing the intricate game, as well as the fast counter-attacking style one.

C.Ronaldo is less effective in technical games with less open spaces I think it's fair to say (and in games where his team isn't superior to opponents).

another overrated game by Cruyff imo. Netherlands had 30 shots vs Sweden' eight. Netherlands dominated more than 60% possesion in group stage game. same story vs Argentina and Uruguay

    vs. East Germany 6.5/10
    vs. Brazil 7/10
    vs. West Germany 7.5/10

faded in the most important stages

Those games vs East Germany, Brazil, West Germany by Cruyff were still very good! Better than vast majority of CR7 games in WC.

They dominated largely because of Cruyff vs Sweden (not only but largely) and his team-mates (though very good players) failed to convert several goals laid on a plate by him pretty much. Over-rated??????

If CR7 spaws lucky goals and assists they are valid on the spreadsheet, but brilliant Cruyff assists and key goals vs Argentina or Brazil are not valid????

Come on mate. Let's not fall out (your historical football contributions are great by the way with what you find), but let's not be silly (IMO).

Cruyff was getting fouled a lot vs Brazil in particular by the way (hence lower dribble numbers) and indeed was getting a bit jaded/(injured?) physically, but still had very impressive later-stage games overall in WC74 I really think it's undeniable to state (otherwise the bar is so high virtually no player gets a pass, including Pele in 1970 for sure, and Messi in 2022, and Baggio in 1994....)

    vs. Brazil 7/10

    about it

    Jairzinho ....said :

he doesn't like European players in general

    he thinks everyone is tough and horrible football players in general ;;

equally he criticized Lothar Matthaus severely in Brazil so many many times on Tv shows
    calling it a hard waist
    and without ginga..

We Brazilians know that Jairzinho is a big fan of Garrincha
    and after Pele

Jairzinho only praises one European player specifically called Johan Cruyff !

Maybe we should stick with mutual appreciation for Gyorgy Sarosi @CristianoPuskas - like I say I don't want to fall out with you (your Youtube videos for Puskas etc are also very good I can say too)!

Sorry if I did get uncharacteristically argumentative (not for the first time), but I do feel players like Cruyff getting downplayed 'because of (basic/without context) stats' vs guys like C.Ronaldo is harsh, to say the least. We all have our own viewpoints and opinions I suppose though....

Haha, well Golf would not always be calming if I would be making bad shots from the fairway (scuffing the connection) or the tee! I was not bad at pitching and chipping but sometimes pretty bad with longer shots lol!

Funnily (not to take the thread off track) somebody did refer to Cruyff being worse than he might have expected when playing Golf actually!

No you didn't write any bad words mate I don't think (just some things I quite strongly disagree with, including 'Cristiano was better' in this new post I guess lol!).

I suppose my initial post about it was because it looked like Dearman was being pressured into changing his order, and putting CR7 above Cruyff, and I wanted to say that not every respected member here (if I am one of those) who is interested in football history and great players, thinks the same as Benficafan on that issue. I knew that you have your doubts about Cruyff (seeing some of his less impressive EC performances) but I would ask that you also analyse the worst games of C.Ronaldo (including in CL) just as harshly.

    Cristiano vs Switzerland 2019
    Vs
    Cruyff vs Sweden 1974

Cristiano vs Switzerland 2019 was Rated 10/10 by Whoscored and sofascore

Johan Cruyff was rated 9.4 by sofascore

it is not always the case that a performance is rated 10/10 by both sites

if we talk about the ‘clutch ability’ since that has been a talking point as of late
Cristiano Scored a hattrick vs Switzerland 2019 with 0 penalties in a 3-1 victory.
You can hardly be more clutch than this.
2 of his goals came after Switzerland equalised

that he was 34 years old surely adds to the impressiveness of this

    if we talk about shots
His 3 non penalty goals came from 5 shots
    IMG_4894.gif
    IMG_4895.gif IMG_4896.gif
All three were world class finishes

Cruyff scored 0 goals vs Sweden 1974 from 4 shots

the big chance he created vs Switzerland was better than any of Cruyffs vs Sweden 1974
    IMG_4901.gif
    it really was

Even well past his dribbling prime this skill vs Switzerland 2019 was better than Cruyffs iconic turn vs Sweden
    IMG_4897.gif

    IMG_4900.gif

    Why is it not comparable?

because one was in the World Cup groupstage and the other in the Nations league semi final?
That’s the only angle from which I can see an argument

if we’re judging purely from what was produced on the field then Cristiano is the clear winner

IMHO The only way you could say C.Ronaldo is clear winner is on goals scored (the same reason for the 10/10 grades - I still feel in cases like these Sofascore is over-generous to scorers by default almost when grading performances - the finish into the corner would go down as a genuine high quality goal though if I'm being fair I guess, and arguably the free-kick too).

Notice that after C.Ronaldo's very slightly Bohinen-esque moment (maybe that's akin to saying Cruyff had a touch of the Rodney Marsh's as the commentator did vs Sweden - Marsh ending up as much less famous than Cruyff and to be fair with a lower prime level as overall player for sure), minus the main skills....
Lars Bohinen on X: "A little clip from one of my first games at @NFFC at the magnificent City Ground. Still in the Championship. Loved those shirts. #forest #cityground https://t.co/xNVLKJuV7z" / X
he then crosses to nobody, while after Cruyff's turn (not less skillful than the C.Ronaldo play for me for sure - less than that particular Bohinen moment yes though, but still better because of the disguise on the turn etc probably) he does get his cross over to a team-mate. Also note the many dribbles and quality chances created by Cruyff (any of those becomes an assist and his 9.4 score goes up I would assume?).

Sweden 1974 was far far better than Sweden 2014 lmaooo
    What a stupid comparison
    Sweden 1974
top 8 in the world by ELO ratings
top 5 in the world cup 1974 by fifa points
0-0 against Netherlands super team (close to winning in late minutes)
0.1 loss against Poland super team
2.2 against W. Geramny super team until 80th minute
Besides its a WC game compare to qualfication match lol
Don't even start with nations league ( friendly games) it's just hilarious

Ronaldo played on tougher games ? WC QF is literally do or die game with World cup finals as its stake. Cruyff played group stage game where Netherlands have already won a game before and would easily qualify into next round anyway. Not to mention Ronaldo played at Sweden ground, and Sweden already got extra motivation after Ibra brace.

I think if there was any sort of argument (based mainly on end product, clutch-ness etc) for C.Ronaldo vs Switzerland 2019 (probably I can say Sweden 2013 too though) as a 9/10 kind of performance (I don't mean according to Sofascore, but where 10/10 is best ever performance in football history kind of thing - 'ultimate' performance), then surely there is a clear and easy argument for Cruyff vs Argentina (where yes he took an early knock and individualistically over the game he didn't show as much as in some other WC74 games), and also Brazil even I'd think for sure, to be given such a rating.

C.Ronaldo is ranked higher in my forward list for a long time but in top 50 footballer, Cruyff was ranked higher when they shared equal total score as Cruyff's overall ability is considered to outclass. The point I'm really doubtful of the reliability of Dutch footballer of the year award between 1960s and 1970sas Cruyff won only 2 times. I am not sure if there any thread in Bigsoccer.com summarized the list particularly by @PuckVanHeel. This is the list I can gather for now.

    Dutch Footballer of The Year
    Reference example for 1968 Limburgsch dagblad » 07 jun 1968 - Art. 123 | Delpher

    1968 Johan Cruyff
    1969 No rating found
    1970 Rinus Israel
    1971 Van Hanegem
    1972 Johan Cruyff
1973 No rating found (Cruyff won Dutch Sportsman of the year)
1974 No rating found (Cruyff won Dutch Sportsman of the year)
    1975 Rinus Israel
