Mier is good and he deserved a chance, and still deserves to be in consideration. But a goalie cannot make big mistakes constantly, it doesn't mean he's done but he's gonna need to sort it out and get back on track.
Worst thing about Mier is the bigger the game - the higher the likelihood that he will screw up. I'm positive he'd screw up in a WC. Just like Higuita did in Colombias up until then most important game ever vs Cameroon. It should be the other way round. Never screwing up when it matters and certainly not as often as this.
Castillo 22 and starting in Portugal pretty tall too. probably will get called unless the coach is trying to put Ospina back in
He has led his Cruz Azul team to the Final against America and yes, had a blunder in which he should have not have tried to bat the ball, just grab or cover it. However in the biggest matches of Cruz Azul's season (CONCACAF Championship) he played very well and minimized his mistakes greatly. So it is not as simple as saying the bigger the game the higher likelihood he will screw up. Also for Colombia- Peru and Argentina were "bigger" games than Venezuela and he played fine so...
Man kind of sucks because we truly can't bury our younger GKs. There are more games to play and another WC to qualify for at some point so we need the younger talent to be tested. Looks like he's had a plenty of brain farts to this season and in the past and as others have posted he has to do much better. That being said Cruz Azul is still in the top 8 thru 11 matches, so they'll prob make the playoffs and only 5 GKs have less goals scored against them, so it's not all horror. He has a ton of confidence with his feet and his positioning but that confidence is also his worst trait. He needs to know his limits and has to improve his IQ. For those that watched Higuita 90 WC, and see him give that game away to Cameroon in quarters, well you know how an overconfident GK can destroy a dream. But Ospina and Montero I don't know if I see them tiers above Mier either. Vargas should stay our #1 and hopefully we wont need to call on #2 or #3.
Mier is a dangerous roller coaster. He can be great. He can be horrible. If we want to do high press and hold a high line he is the one that can help out the most because of his possession and passing distribution that is second to none in our player pool. But of course there is risk to a high line and him being so far away from goal. I am surprised Montero got the call cause he has only played in like two matches in a month. I like him a lot though and think he may be the solid choice after Mier. I have mentioned this in many threads but Montero has played well for us every time he has started . He has never given up a goal in those situations. The one goal he did give up was because Vargas got a stupid penalty against Uruguay and he had to come in cold and try to stop it. I trust him if he has to be the starter next cycle. That is, if he gets playing time. There's rumors he may get transferred to Junior next semester so let's see how that plays out. Other than that maybe that Castillo kid in Portugal plays well. But he is still too raw and inexperienced.
best way to hide weak GK and/or defending is to score more than the other team. Hoping we can do that in the WC.
Reminds me of Bielsa's Chile for 2010 as this was a lot of this mentality. They had so many goal scoring opportunities/goals every game that their output was insane with at least 6 players ready to score. BUT defensively they were one of the worst teams I'd ever seen. Needless to say they went to the WC and we didnt.
It looks like the Colombian Football Federation is trying to convince Cristhian Mosquera to switch his NT ambitions from Spain to Colombia. He has represented Spain at the U15, U16, U18, U19, U21 and U23 levels, but is not a lock for the Spanish NT at WC 2026. Colombia are promising him a spot for their NT at the upcoming WC. https://as.com/futbol/seleccion/colombia-mete-prisa-a-mosquera-f202510-n/
If you ever meet a mosquera in the world, there's very little chance he'll be anything but colombian We love naming everyone mosquera
Ive seen that name here and there though in other south American countries and also in Spain. But its more common with us
Is that how a dyslexic spells "John"? I knew a John who spelled it "Jon". He wanted to be "different". Haha. Probably a theater kid.
