Maybe De Bruyne was right and Belgium is too old?

    I was just thinking that.

However, I still don't have a reasonble expectation re: Japan/Costa Rica.

They've certainly gone off a cliff in their play. They've just been terrible.

edit: And now that it's 2-0, they've just been beyond terrible.

And just like that, Costa Rica becomes the only team from CONCACAF to have won a game so far.

Now losing. The Croats have been clinical in front of goal. Canada's defense has given too much space.

There’s 2 basic ways to defend. You can play with high energy and play a kind of man to man. Be tight.

Or you can be positionally disciplined and close off the gaps.

Canada is trying an unorthodox 3rd strategy of “neither.”

First 25 minutes, it was all Canada. Last 25 minutes (with stoppage), all Croatia.

Why is the crowd booing Canadia's keeper?

Edit - looks like he was born in Croatia, but is of Serbian ethnicity and currently plays for Red Star Belgrade, so I'm guessing Croatian fans don't think too much of him.

Yeah, this tournament shows that CONCACAF kinda sucks.

Also, it shows how fvkcing stoopid it will be to expand this tournament to 48 teams. I mean, imagine Guatemala or Honduras getting their @sses whooped 10-0 against a far stronger side.

Then, we will have to endure stoopid, pre-planned goal celebrations like we see in the WWC between teams that are not a match for each other.

I posted in the MLS thread that CONCACAF was doing what could only be expected when you think of who they played.

Coming into the tournament you would not expect to get a win or even a point against Spain, Argentina, Belgium or England. Then you also had a game against the runner-up at the last Cup (Croatia).

So you would have expected to be 0-0-5, yet CONCACAF took one point from those games.

For the other three games, CONCACAF has gone unbeaten, with one win (Japan) and two draws (Poland and Wales).

Overall, if you are realistic about expectations, CONCACAF has not done badly at all and potentially exceeded expectations given the competition.

    Oh, no doubt.

But it'll lead to a sh!+-ton of noncompetitive matches.
