The only main variation was the 6:00 time slot, otherwise the afternoon slots are pretty much identical. We only had one primetime match...
According to Nielsen, the USA v Ghana World Cup match pulled a 2.6 rating and 3.819 million viewers on ESPN, making it the #7 Cable TV program for the week of June 19th. Not too shabby considering it was on between 7AM and 10AM on a weekday across the country. Via MultiChannel News: http://onthepitch.org/2006/06/30/usa-v-ghana-and-overall-world-cup-tv-ratings-so-far/ 2006 schedule. Group stage matches were 9 AM, 12 PM, and 3 PM. The last group matchday with simultaneous play was 10 AM and 3 PM. Round of 16 and quarter finals - 11 AM and 3 PM. Semis at 3 PM, final at 2 PM. These are probably the 2 1/2 hr broadcast windows. http://www.docsports.com/world-cup/2006-world-cup-tv-schedule.html
bill hofheimer @bhofheimer_espn · 37m WatchESPN had a record 1.7m peak concurrent viewers for #USAvsGER. Minor issues at start. Internet never tested like this for sports event.
USAvGER: top market overnight rating @Ourand_SBJ: Top TV markets: NY (9.7), SD (8.6), Sac. (8.3), Sea (8.1), Orl (8.1), Balt (8.1), Columbus (8.1), W Palm (7.9), Providence (7.6), SF (7.2). 6.3 overnight rating for the game, but it was for the 3- hour window...The game peaked around 9.4 rating towards the end of the game...This what I was expecting, but we should still see around 10 million average...
USvGER: 3.4 viewers on Univision Deportes...+ 1.7 million unique viewers on their platform.... Still waiting for ESPN nos.
Interesting the the top overall WC14 market is not even on the list (DC). We were all working (just kidding, we were watching online or in bars near work).
Final numbers are in: http://espnmediazone.com/us/press-r...up-match-ever-record-viewership-on-watchespn/ Highlights: US v. Germany earned a 6.7 final US HH rating on ESPN 10.8 million viewers on ESPN alone largest weekday daytime audience in ESPN history over 1 million average per minute audience on WatchESPN Group play averaged 3.54 million viewers across ABC/ESPN/ESPN2, up 48% over 2010 and up 109% over 2006
Great numbers for a weekday, noon ET game: USA-Germany: 14.2M TV viewers on ESPN +Univision and 4.9M unique viewers for ESPN and Univision combined.
The USA/Algeria game in 2010 got about 6 million viewers on ESPN at a similar time slot. It's too bad the R16 match against Belgium is on another weekday. That would probably get 20 million+ on ESPN if it was on Sunday. If we do get into the quarterfinals, it will be on the weekend but it will be at 9am/12pm which might lower the ratings a bit.
Does anyone know if FIFA is able to move game times depending on the match up? Let's say USA and Mexico meet in the semi-finals, does it really make sense to air that game at 1 pm on a Tuesday? Even a potential USA vs Argentina game should be played at a later time slot to accommodate the tv viewers of the teams playing. It's like FIFA is always catering to European networks even if no European teams are playing.
The game on Tuesday could pull around 14-15 million on ESPN since it starts @4:00 pm EST (5 million on Univision)...A scenario for a Quarterfinal match against Argentina on ABC will pull over 20+ million regardless of early morning on the West Coast....If we make it that far, the game will become the highest rated Soccer game in the US....Univision could pull 7 million+ for the same game... If we make it to the Semis, ESPN might pull ABC into the mix...The whole country might come to a stop based on the current trends.
I do think 3:00-5:00 (CST) is better than 11:00-1:00. I'm going to leave work early on Tuesday, and I bet others will do the same.
bill hofheimer @bhofheimer_espn Sat’s #BRAvsCHI match on ABC earns 3.8 fast natl rtg and 6.1 mil viewers. Highest-rated non-US match ever in #WorldCup Rd of 16. Mike Humes @MikeHumesESPN Thru 50 World Cup matches, ESPN is averaging 2.3 rating & 3,653,000 viewers, up 28% (vs 1.8) & 31% (2,791,000) over 2010. Mike Humes @MikeHumesESPN Brazil-Chile does 3.8 rating, ABC/ESPN's 3rd highest-rated Round of 16 match ever (behind US-Brazil '94 & US-Ghana '10). Tara Chozet @TaraESPN ESPN/ABC continuing to put up strong numbers, yesterday's #BRAvsCHI earned 3.8 HH rtg, highest-rated non-US match ever in Rd of 16. Mike Soltys @espnmikes Thru 50 games, ESPN World Cup viewership up 31%. That will increase this week.
I do not understand the question. Saturday is a weekend, when many businesses are closed. For most people it will not be a work day. Or you could be insinuating that we will all be hung over from July 4, which is a national holiday to celebrate our independence from England. Either way, you are correct: Saturday July 5 will probably not be a working day for most people in the United States.
Is the comparison for the Cup through 50 matches in 2014 and the first 50 matches in 2010, or the first 50 in 2014 vs. the whole tournament in 2010?
I think ESPN will pull around 6 million for #NEDvMEX-it could become the highest rated ESPN match outside US matches eclipsing GERvGHA which pulled 5.7 million.
bill hofheimer @bhofheimer_espn More strong #WorldCup ratings for ESPN: #NEDvsMEX and #CRCvsGRE Rd of 16 matches on Sun both earn 4.5 overnight ratings. Mike Humes @MikeHumesESPN ESPN's top 5 all-time World Cup overnight ratings are from 2014 with 4.5s for Netherlands-Mexico & Costa Rica-Greece. Mike Soltys @espnmikes All of ESPN's top 5 all-time World Cup overnight ratings have come this month, including both games yesterday at a 4.5. Mike Humes @MikeHumesESPN Top markets for CRCvsGRE: DC (7.2), Boston (6.7), NY (6.5), San Fran (6.0), Richmond (5.8), Seattle (5.7) & LA (5.6). Top markets for #NEDvsMEX: San Diego (8.3), LA (7.5), San Fran (7.0), DC (6.8), NY (6.4) & Miami (5.7).
I think the first one - first 50 matches - 2014 vs 2010 - because the other wouldn't be a fair comparison ya know?
@Ourand_SBJ: Univision's local ratings for Mexico-Netherlands are strong as expected: LA (14.7), Miami (11.5), Houston (10.0), Dallas (7.4), NYC (5.0). If you look at ESPNs Top markets as well for the same game: The combined rating in LA was around 22.o household rating... Miami around 17.0 rating The bottom line is that both the NEDvMEX and CRCvGRE will pull around 6 million viewers on ESPN ( all within my range) or a little above 6 million... Univision looks like it will pull around 9 million-10 million for NEDvMEX....
Overnight (metered-market) ratings for the weekend's matches (from Showbuzzdaily): Saturday 4.5 rating ABC 11:30 am Brazil vs Chile (versus 2.8 rating last Saturday on ESPN for Argentina vs Iran) 4.0 rating ABC 3:30 pm Columbia vs Uruguay (versus 4.1 rating last week on ESPN at 2:30 pm for Germany vs Ghana) Sunday 4.5 rating ESPN 11:30 am Netherlands vs Mexico (versus 3.0 rating last week on ABC for Belgium vs Russia) 4.5 rating ESPN 3:30 pm Costa Rica vs Greece (versus 3.6 rating last week on ABC at 2:30 pm for South Korea vs Algeria)
Yeah...but the first week or so of the tournament, I thought we were tracking 40+% ahead of 2010. Now look where we are.
