I think we can stop worrying about the goals now. The tournament has picked up considerably, even if it is not reflected in the goal scoring of matches such as GER-SER and SPA-SWI. There hasn't been a poor game since Portugal -Ivory coast.

FIFA world cup low scoring. Changes?

After many low scoring games at this world cup group play i think FIFA should start looking into doing some changes until 2014.

How about 0 points for 0-0 matches to encourage more attacking football? It looks like many teams has the mentality of just defending a 0-0 draw going into the matches, and many historically smaller football-nations are getting better at it. If you have to score to get a point you allso have to consentrate on the offense and not just defending.

    Other suggestions?

Just because the final score of a game is 0-0 or low scoring doesn't mean the match wasn't good/great. Likewise, with high scoring matches.

Also, when two quality teams are facing each other, they often nulify one another. I don't really expect one to destroy the other.

Maybe not original but why is it stupid? Smartass
Why do teams putting 10 players just defending deserve points. And i know 0-0 matches can sometimes be good but if you can not score so be it, you don't get points.

I know that, 0-0 matches can sometimes be good but seldom, people want goals as well. Most people would rather have 1-1 or 2-2.

Soccer is perfect, so we should ridicule anyone who proposes changes. I mean, I've seen the following ridiculous proposals recently:

    - last man even is onside
    - 3 points for a win
    - goalkeeper can't use his hands on backpass
    - red/yellow cards for professional fouls

Where do people get these crazy ideas?

you really don't get it, do you?? no-one is claiming good ideas are not welcome, people have a problem with shit ideas. I've been very much in favour of all the above changes, and I'm open to more. I'd like technology to be used etc. but a lot of people just come up with some complete bs like massive goals, outlawing ball blocking, 0 points for 0-0s etc. it's just pathetic. and then they cry when no-one takes them serious...

How about we give a hundred points for a goal and negative a hundred points for zero goals. That should encourage teams to score more.

Sometime earlier I messed up the calculation so I'll do it again.

After today's matches, we are at 49 goals in 26 matches = 1.89 goals per match.

Yeah you're right. I was just in a grumpy mood this morning. I'm still not convinced that 0 for 0-0 is a bad idea, but there have been plenty of threads about this already.

That is not a good idea. 0 points for teams that can not score a single goal in 90 minutes is. Why not explain why it is a bad idea instead of dicussing like a child.
Lets face it, most times 0-0 matches are shit.

I like this idea the more I think about it. 1st: it's not really too drastic. The percentage of 0-0 games is rather small. But, it will influence teams to attack more, knowing the only way they get at least a point is scoring at least one goal. It's the best idea I've heard of so far, at least.

Re: FIFA world cup low scoring. Changes?

This has already been mentioned before I think, but what's to stop teams just agreeing to let each other score one goal each at the beginning of the match to at least do away with the threat of the 0-0?

Anyway I am happy that the GPG average of the tournament is recovering somewhat, hence reducing the chance of knee-jerk rule changes from FIFA after the tournament. I think that if the GPG average exceeds 2.00 then we should be relatively safe...

Well Paraguay are doing thier bit to up the GPG average. 2-0 up against a dreadful Slovakia side. Hopefully, the Italians will stick a few past the Kiwis and there will be a 7-7 draw or something in the Brasil vs Cote D' Ivoire match :p:D

The five CONMEBOL teams are topping their groups.

The other two are two UEFA (Netherlands and Slovenia(!)) and Ghana (CAF's best hope).

Of the five guys who've scored more than once, 4 are South Americans and one is African.
