World Cup 2003 motto- The 2003 WWC is coming to America. I believe that this time the focus should be on soccer. I support Women's sports etc. but I think this time the soccer community should be a bit more selfish and concentrate more attention on the fact that the U.S. has won Two WWC's an olympic gold and silver medals. Therefore I propose the slogan for the 2003 WWC should be - World Cup 2003 a Celebration of Soccer or alternatively World Cup 2003 a Celebraton of Women's Soccer.

I think there are two aspects to sloganeering.

One is advertising here in America.

    There the theme is simple.

    See America's Team.

The USWNT united this country behind a sports team like no other team since the Miracle on Ice.

They are American heroes and should be promoted as such.

As for the world theme, I would suggest borrowing from the '86 Mets slogan.

Soccer Like It Ought To Be.

This focuses on soccer while sending a powerful message that women playing it prominently in front of wild crowds is the embodiment of an ideal and an advancement for the world (especially since the host nation has since the last WWC destroyed two nations with regressive policies towards women).

Let me add something I posted in another thread.

The focus has to be on the play and the competition.

We owe Sun Wen a debt of gratitude for trash-talking the USWNT.

It lends itself to a scintillating ad:

Clips of the great vets working out today, displaying their speed, fitness and skill, competing fiercely and successfully against both foreigners and American younger stars, with the background voice saying, "shouldn't you be doing this after 30?" Then show shots of young greats like Wagner and Wambach, in international play, with a woman's voice in the background saying "Sun Wen thinks America's women are too old to compete. Tell that to Aly Wagner (as she flies past another team or threads a great pass). Tell that to Abby Wambach (as she overpowers an opponent). Tell that to Brandi Chastain (show her barreling over an opponent). Tell that to Mia Hamm (pick any recent great play). [Pause]." Then have Chastain or Hamm say, "Bring it on!" Then a recognizable sports broadcaster's voice (my preference is Gary Thorn, who should be picked to do the final) booms out, "The Women's World Cup. It keeps getting better and better."

In fact, maybe the theme of WWC '03 should be,

    BRING IT ON!

The emphatic eagerness of these women to compete as athletes WILL resonate with the public.

How 'bout you borrow a different slogan from the '86 Mets? -- "Women's World Cup 2003: Cocaine Wins Championships!"

The World's best is coming to America to play the World's Game.

    The Future is Now.

We don't need any of those US v the World slogans. We are getting enough of those type of ideas coming from across the road from Lafayette Park and sports are one way to build bridges.

Women's Soccer; Where the athletic and talented meet the competitive

Bunk. That is exactly what the tournament needs.

I'm sorry, but while for purists like us Brazil versus Norway holds appeal, and the up and coming France versus the continually improving Canada is intriguing, to the rest of the country this is about the one thing that draws fans to big events.

It's the USA against everyone else.

The fact that our women have a chance to shine on their own center stage may make it even more appealing to many folks, and the women's team achievement of popularity is an embodiment of American ideals that makes the team even more appealing to the general public, but what motivates the interest of the wider public is a USA versus the world mentality -- especially at a time when so many seem to be against the USA for such foolish reasons.

I agree but I have a concern: This puts the US team under a LOT of pressure to succeed. Should the US loose in the quarter finals it will be perceived as a HUGE defeat and a failure for women’s soccer and it may even extend to soccer in general.

In fact many will perceive anything less than a repeat to be a loss. The biased media will foster that belief. And the extremists on the anti-soccer side will feed on the perception like vultures on a dead hippo.

If we, as fans, give them more to feed on then we are setting ourselves up for a huge fall.

We need to support the team; we need to publicize the event; we need to get turnouts at all game; but we do NOT need to make it more of a confrontation than the competition itself does.

This is a potential windfall for US Women’s soccer and it could be enough to save the WUSA but we need to make it a celebration of soccer not a confrontation.

That's another thing. It does put a lot of pressure on a US team that is starting to begin a time of transition. First of all, as in most tournaments it won't be one team against all. US can wind up with an easy group like Argentina, Ghana and Russia. Sure all hard-hitters but with our depth we should crush them. I have already talked about my getting-out-the-crowd ideas. Of course, now it looks like it will be for TV which will be twenty times harder. Bummer.

" but what motivates the interest of the wider public is a USA versus the world mentality -- especially at a time when so many seem to be against the USA for such foolish reasons.'

I'm trying to avoid putting politics into the discussion for getting the people to go the games and watching it on TV and you want that. We agree to disagree.

That being said. I have to agree with this idea:

"World Cup 2003 a Celebration of Soccer or alternatively World Cup 2003 a Celebraton of Women's Soccer."

Now whether or not there are two slogans, one domestic and another foreign, doesn't matter to me. But it should be noted that I have received positive reactions to this one:

"The Women's World Cup; Where the athletic and talented meet the competitive"

I changed it around a little bit. I mis-typed it earlier.

I would like a commercial for the World Cup to be similar to the excellent one on PAX where it talks about the shots, the saves, the tackles and the fans. That would be great.

"The Future is now" is great but it's too obscure for the non-soccer fan. Well, that's not true. It's not obscure if you know the reference but otherwise it's a hopeful statement.
