Sue Bird wins it for team and Sarah Hughes wins it for individual. Read more about it here: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/2002-10-21-sportswomen-honors_x.htm
My wife was a volunteer at the gala. Not as many soccer players as last year (Gold Cup warm-ups are FAR more important). She said that Charmine Hooper is actually very nice. There was a Norwegian there also (the one who is really American). Saskia Weber was also supposed to attend, but was ill. (In the irony department, one of the gifts in the gift bag was a a copy of "SI for Women".)
You mean none of the "greatest thing since sliced bread" Charge players made it? what a travesty! WAR SUE!
Seattle did very well this year, finally, with Bird and Loz (Lauren Jackson), which can't be said for Orlando, where the Miracle are closing up shop and will probably relocate to San Antonio. Also, in a quiet move, the NBA board of governors OK'd a bylaws change moving WNBA teams away from league ownership to *independent* ownership. Owners from here on out don't have to be affiliated with, nor do franchises have to be located in, NBA cities. I believe there's reason to worry about the future of that league. Especially if a CBA can't be worked out by the 2003 draft in April. Paul
The Orlando owners didn't want to deal with the Miracle. They want to concentrate solely on the Magic. Yeah looks like San Antonio may get the next WNBA franchise. I do believe they have presold 6000 season tix. But nothing is confirmed yet. For all we know the Miracle could be moving to Wanker County, Georgia.
I don't agree that the WNBA's futre is in jeopardy. The problem is that they started adding expansion teams before they broke even, which didn't happen till year five. There's a lesson for the WUSA in that.
