2019/20 the kickoff! Maybe it really will be the best season, it was a hell of a weekend. So much entusiasmo...

Inter Milan began in Serie A after promotion, but Verona's Benedetta Glionna scored twice and hit Inter with a last-second equalizer:

The other new team, Empoli, acquitted themselves well, scoring first in an away game at the champions:

    (Goals: Girelli 55', Caruso 70' - Cecilia Prugna 26'p)

AC Milan are looking like title challengers again – 3 goals, all in the last quarter of the game, scored by Nora Heroum (FIN), Slovenia's Dominika Čonč on debut, and Valentina Giacinti near the end:

In the south, Pink Bari marked their relegation reprieve with a point, and 2 goals for Cristina Carp, against the 5th-place finisher Sassuolo (in black/green):

The Florence derby had the same scoreline as last time:

Benedetta Glionna was at Juventus last season: she's a young player and probably this year she would have had to face a though competition for a starting spot in Juventus, with so many Italian and international "stars". Verona can be a good chance for her to undisputedly shine instead.

    2nd matchday

Juventus and AC Milan won well to stay unbeaten, the only teams on 100%. Newly promoted, Inter met Empoli, both seeking their first win:

Unluckily looks like women's football, in Italy, is never important enough to deserve an effort.

This is the first derby in Serie A femminile since the acquisition af Milan and Inter by the respective men's clubs and many had said that such a match could have deserve San Siro stadium (where the men's derby was recently played) as a venue.

But it's been subsequently said to be impossible because important "works" have to be made at the stadium in this same week-end. So the women's derby will be played at the stadium Breda in Sesto San Giovanni. :(

Ahhhh, we don't need no San Siro. That place is a dump!

...oops sorry, I was thinking of a different place

Yeah, a derby there would've been awesome, but maybe it'll be better when Inter Women are more established. The next derby is 1 February - and from what I've seen, both clubs should be in the top 6 this season, so maybe they'll try it then? Such a big venue is a handy ace to hold, when Juve and other clubs are competing for more attendances.

Do you know if AC Milan's new stadium is any good, the Brianteo?

I wasn't aware Milan had moved their games to the Brianteo stadium for this season. It's surely an upgrade to the former Vismara field, that looked like little more than a training ground: Brianteo is a veritable arena, with standings on all sides of the pitch (despite those standings being actually big, covered and always opened just on the main side) and has been used by the local men's side in the past even for 2nd Division matches.

The stadium isn't actually in Milano: it's in Monza, in the northern suburbs, but it's very well connected to the center of the town; men's Monza team, who will share the venue with women's Milan this season, currently plays in men's 3rd Division; as you can figure, at this level men's venues are required some quite high-level standards, so the women will have the chance to play in a stadium that's cleared for some of the highest levels of men's league.

I've never been to stadium Brianteo (in past years I had followed a pair matches of Fiammamonza, Monza's women's team that back then had played in 1st Division for some seasons, but they weren't using Brianteo, that at the time was "reserved" to the men, and had to settle for the smaller Sada Stadium), but I've been said is a good venue.

Interesting tidbit: when Silvio Berlusconi, former Italian premier and former Milan men's team owner, sold Milan to other investors from overseas, he couldn't actually resist the temptation to remain in the football environment: so he bought Monza's men's team (that at the time had gone bankrupt and had been relegated to minor local leagues) and brought it back to Third Division (where the team is actually leading the rankings and is fighting to be promoted in Second Division). Berlusconi is not formally the president of the club, but he's anyway the owner. So, basically, Milan's women's team is now sharing the stadium with a team owned by Silvio Berlusconi: I expect the quality of the venue being accordingly quite high.

...Yeah, I guess the VIP facilities would be very nice. It could even become his "home away from home arrest".

Well, here's the full-on SUPER HYPED coverage of the FIRST EVER MILAN DERBY (since the previous one)... First: No. I We delve behind the scenes into the murky world of that ground Inter play in, and then II the match itself. Last time in the Coppa Italia, it was a 5-3 away win for AC Milan at Inter, and this time...

In fact is an unusual luxury, both for women's football in general and for Italian women's football in particular.

The forum barely managed not to collapse. :giggle:

Not the slightest idea. Maybe someone wants to market Serie A Femminile overseas? o_O

AC Milan put the full derby game on their Dailymotion channel, where they seem to upload videos in Italian and then again in English.

The rest of the 3rd matchday: Fiorentina beat Tavagnacco 2-1 with De Vanna and Bonetti on target, while Sassuolo (6th) won at Bergamo 1-0 with Daniela Sabatino's chipped goal in the area.

In Turin, Juventus v FLorentia began with headers by Cristiana Girelli and Dessi Dupuy, to make it 1-1 at halftime - the Bulgarian-American Dupuy scored 8 goals for Verona in 2018/19. Further goals by Juve's new arrivals, defender Linda Sembrant (SWE) and Maria Alves (BRZ), made it 3-1. In the south, the 0-0 draw kept Pink Bari and Verona undefeated, but the home team stayed winless.

AS Roma have livestreamed some women's team's games:
    [IMG][IMG] Roma v Empoli (3rd matchday) live / Highlights
[IMG] Verona v Roma (4th matchday) live / Highlights

On the 4th matchday, Fiorentina needed a win to keep the pace with 3rd-placed Roma. The Viola were 2 minutes from defeat, but made an unbelievable turnaround:

    Sassuolo 1 - 2 Fiorentina - (Michela Cambiaghi 80 - Tatiana Bonetti 88', Janni Arnth 93')
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYZ0eFgHAzE
    [IMG]

Milan kept a 100% record and 1st place by beating Tavagnacco just 2-0. There was the season's first win for Empoli 4-1 over Bergamo, and FLorentia's first win after 3 defeats:

    FLorentia 3 - 2 Pink Bari - (Kelly 1', Martinovic 19', 29' - Culver 2', Carp 62')
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCC0bmp5CPk
    [IMG]

Juventus made it 4 wins from 4, sitting in 2nd place on goal difference. But more home disappointment for Inter, despite the excellent vegetation

    Inter Milan 0 - 3 Juventus - (Rosucci 24', Girelli 30', Cernoia 90')
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHz-ghCx6T0
    [IMG]

This past weekend, the Supercoppa 2019 had the Coppa Italia finalists Fiorentina playing the double-winners Juve, in a repeat of the cup final.
The champions' win included a late goal by Czech signing Andrea Stašková:

    Juventus 2 - 0 Fiorentina - (Girelli 12', Stašková 92')
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=qV_6pADZjKg
    [IMG]

Here's the Classifica (standings) so far, along with each team's all-important Media Inglese:
Milan 4, Juve 4, Roma 1, Fiorentina 1, Verona -3, Sassuolo -4, Inter -6, FLorentia -5, Pink Bari -5, Empoli -5, and in the Zona Retrocessione it's unlucky Tavagnacco with -4 and Orobica Bergamo with a massive -7.
 So, in summary, the media inglese isn't all-important, but Inter's home form is dragging their score down!

Games in the 5th matchday -

AC Milan drew and lost the top spot - but they could regain it in the big game tomorrow. Fiorentina's Viola remain in 4th:

    Fiorentina Women vs Milan 1-1 - (Guagni 33' - Salvatori Rinaldi 65')
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=5drLk68D2Og
    [IMG]

A good result for Pink Bari, but Inter Milan are struggling to win - only 5pts in 5 games for them.

    PINK BARI 1-1 INTER - (Shona Zammit 11' - Stefania Tarenzi 28')
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fd3-mLYUZI
    [IMG]

Roma are alone in 3rd place, with their 4th win of the season. But more regrets for Sassuolo, who had plenty of chances to get a draw:

    Roma - Sassuolo 2-1 - (Kaja Erzen 20', Bernauer 53' - Caesar og 69')
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0FMD_GOiR4
    [IMG]

As AC Milan drew, Juventus went ahead at the top by 2 points:

    Juventus - Hellas Verona 3-0 - (Girelli 3', 88', Maria Alves 64')
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-cO4BEcA8E
    [IMG]

Clear away wins for Empoli (5th) and FLorentia (6th), their second win each, but nobody is near to breaking the top four teams' monopoly (quadropoly?). On the losing side, Tavagnacco and Orobica Bergamo are at the bottom in 11th and 12th:

    Tavagnacco - Empoli 1-3 - (Elisa Polli 31' - Hjohlman 17', Prugna 18, Simonetti 59'p)

[IMG][IMG] The full AC Milan v Juve is online. A match thrilling and frustrating in equal measure, played on an old-fashioned watery pitch -- that really disrupted the rhythm, but it called for immense skill just for the teams to make their usual plays.

Quite a blow for Juve: they won't have Eni Aluko after November. It seems her contract is up and she's decided to move back to London. Presumably her new club will be announced shortly. There's a lot of goodwill between Aluko and Juventus, and her 18 months overseas have been a success for both of them, but this season Girelli and Alves have scored the most goals for the Bianconeri. Those two will prob continue as the forward line for now. Still, could Juve sign another attacker?

Aluko is still available for 2 more Juventus games, at Roma (today) and v Fiorentina (30 Nov).

Action in the 6th and 7th matchdays:

The first upset defeat for a top 4 team this season, as FLorentia beat Roma:

    Highlights
    FLorentia 2 - 1 Roma - (Martinovic 11', Kelly 47 - Thomas 62')
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAuI6fPg-J0
    [IMG]

    (Full match: AS Roma channel)

Empoli got their best win in the season so far, at Verona. But they're struggling for consistency and haven't won since then:

Hellas Verona (blue) 1 - 4 Empoli (white)
    (Pirone 83' - Papaleo 25', Hjohlman 43', Simonetti 48', Cinotti 68')
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIMeEJzlwIU
    [IMG]

[IMG] The following week the Gialloblù put up major resistance and came back from 3-0 to 3-2 at Fiorentina, before Parisi hit a fourth goal. The Viola are currently 2nd, due to AC Milan not playing this week.

    Fiorentina 4 - 2 Verona
    (Mauro 8', 35', Bonetti 50', Parisi 88' - Benedetta Glionna 64', Veronica Pasini 80')
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEOH0aJ8NPM

[IMG] Orobica Bergamo (1 point) and Tavagnacco (2pts) are way down in the relegation zone; I've even heard the word "rubbish" being used! Tavagnacco actually had some good chances v Inter but were undone by two great goals.
For Pink Bari, things have gone OK since their relegation reprieve in 2019: they're relatively safe on 8pts.

    Orobica Bergamo 1 - 3 Pink Bari - (Martina Zanoli 5' - Noemi Manno 15', 41', Francesca Soro 64')
Tavagnacco 0 - 2 Inter Milan in Lazio kits - (Stefania Tarenzi 37', Gloria Marinelli 56')

Other games, with the league's effective top 2 - Juventus got a big win at Roma:

    AC Milan 1 - 0 Sassuolo - (Sandra Zigić 60')
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MJE61TxFCE
    [IMG]

    Roma 0 - 4 Juventus - (Alves 30', Girelli 64', Rosucci 85', Caruso 92')

Serie A Femminile is now on break for four weeks. These were December's livestreaming matches in the 9th and 10th matchdays:

Orobica are probably not long for this division, losing most of their games in 2019 - back in February they lost 3-2 at home to the high-flying Roma. The rematch was on Saturday at Rome's Stadio Tre Fontane:

FLorentia have taken their second big win against the odds - and the 11th-place Tavagnacco got a vital 3 points, so the relegation battle is on. More about that later...

Serie A Femminile continues tomorrow. These were last highlights of 2019

The big results of the 8th matchday, a very good day for Juve:

(A full video is on Milan's channel)

Also in the 8th/9th/10th games, behind the big 4, Sassuolo went ahead of three rivals with three good results. A 1-0 win over Inter Milan, a 3-0 over FLorentia the next week, and Sassuolo drew 2-2 at Empoli – Sassuolo now in 5th place, FLorentia 6th.

Inter Milan couldn't keep up with the established names, losing at home to Roma 4-1 and then 4-0 at Fiorentina, who did some good conclusiones. Inter (9th) have three midtable clashes coming up.

Tavagnacco (11th) got their first win of the season at FLorentia, at the same ground where AC Milan had fallen just weeks before...
    Hey, more conclusiones!

    FLorentia 1 - 2 Tavagnacco
    (Kelly 73'p - Elisa Polli 48', Veronica Benedetti 95')

AC Milan stayed in touch, just, by winning away at Verona:
    Hellas Verona 0 - 1 AC Milan - (Giacinti 49')
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRfMM1tG94k

    After 10 games:
Juve 28pts, Fiorentina 22pts, Roma 21pts. AC Milan have 20pts with a postponed game in hand.

The 11th matchday includes the Sunday games AC Milan v Empoli, and Tavagnacco v Juve.

That 11th matchday had a big effect on the title race - we're only midway through the season, but it's looking very good for Juve.

[IMG][IMG] Today there's a match which will be important in the Champions League chase, as 2nd place is certainly close behind Fiorentina. Today's game on Monday afternoon is AC Milan v Roma. Roma are seeking their first win over Milan.
It's kicking off at the Vismara centre at 12.30 CET (on Milan and Roma TV, maybe online too) ... Why a game is at 12.30 on a Monday, um, I'm not sure.
.....Well, y'know, maybe someone pressed the wrong button on a computer, or something. I'm happy to say, from this I've learned the Italian phrase, "che senso ha?" ("what's the point?")

[IMG][IMG] Saturday's live game featured Verona and Inter Milan - two teams who should be evenly matched in the mid-table group, but the actuality was quite a surprise (it's fair to say, I "don't get" Inter).

Coppa Italia: One outstanding result from the round of 16. The famous San Marino are going to the quarter-finals! We've talked a lot about the lack of a San Marino national women's team, but the club is doing brilliantly. (As @gricio61 posted in 2016, they went up from Serie C)

[IMG] In 2020 the club, named San Marino Academy, are leading Serie B ahead of Napoli and Lazio. If San Marino finish in the top 2... presumably they could legally enter Serie A? If they wanted to?
In their cup game, in December 2019, they beat the top-division club Verona, a home win 1-0 with Raffaella Barbieri's goal.

It can be worth noting that the latest match-day had a big effect on the relegation race also: Tavagnacco, by barely squeezing a 1-0 win vs last-placed one-pointer Orobica Bergamo (yes, they only made 1 single point in the league so far o_O) managed to catch-up with Pink Bari at one-to-last place, with 8 points. Next week, the direct clash Pink Bari-Tavagnacco could give a big advantage in the race to the winner (or leave everything unchanged in the case of a draw).

It's Milan derby day (Sunday 12.30 CET), and looking back at January I'll focus on AC Milan as they had a totally crazy month, sitting in equal 2nd place.

Empoli shocked Milan with an away win, unprecedented this season and only Milan's 2nd loss:

    AC Milan 1 - 2 Empoli Ladies
(Tucceri Cimini 88' - Cecilia Prugna 53', Di Guglielmo 82')
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRvondo3zjQ
    [IMG]

The Milan-Roma game was well worth watching and at least got a few fans on a Monday afternoon - Roma took a 2-0 lead, and then proceeded to, well... you'll see. An international scoresheet with names from Iceland (loan), South Africa and France.

    AC Milan 3 - 2 AS Roma
    (Thorvaldsdóttir 70', 89', Refiloe Jane 78' - Lindsey Thomas 20', 49')
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_MXKrXotxk
    [IMG]

(Full game is on Roma Facebook)

Orobica played with heart and tenacity, Lia Lonni had a brilliant game in goal, and they got some luck. It wasn't refined but it mostly worked. The bottom team (1 point in 5 months) were minutes from achieving the biggest surprise of the season, until Milan's Dominika Čonč hit a match-winning Čončlusione:

And an extra match on Tuesday. Luckily it wasn't crazy at all.

    AC Milan 6 - 3 Pink Bari - (Giacinti 1', 50', 82', Heroum 53', Jane 56', Thorvaldsdóttir 78' - Torres 17', Carp 77', Manno 88')

Inter Milan are coming into today's derby in 6th place, off 3-0 wins over Verona and Empoli, so it should be a good contest at the Brianteo, or a huge mismatch, or something else ridiculous. Who knows? :)

Sassuolo are showing their potential in 5th place, with two wins to open 2020 before falling at Juve 2-1 last week. Juventus are leading the league by 6pts with 8 games to go, despite Juve's bad result yesterday at FLorentia, a real bogey ground for the top teams this season. Also last week, two other title-chasers met and played to a draw, which can only help the bianconeri:

    Roma 2 - 2 Fiorentina - (Thestrup 34', Andressa 91'p - De Vanna 17', Breitner 78')

[IMG][IMG] Keep an eye on the Sunday matches in Serie B as well - it's a 2nd v 1st game between San Marino and Napoli. Last week, Lazio (3rd) beat San Marino and knocked them off the top spot, so today Lazio have a chance to go 2nd.

Derby highlights - a narrower win for ACM:

    AC Milan 2 - 1 Inter Milan
    (Thorvaldsdóttir 69', Giacinti 78 - Eva Bartoňová 51)

Dominika Čonč made a cool day-in-the-life video for the Milan channel, also talking about her upbringing in Maribor, Slovenia.

The Florence derby took place in January, but was a much easier win for the favourites than their previous few meetings:

    Fiorentina 6 - 1 Florentia
    (Bonetti 5', 34', 50, Mauro 9', 43', De Vanna 67' - Martinovic 54')

[IMG] In Serie B, Napoli looked Serie A-class as they beat San Marino 3-1, and Napoli also had a penalty saved. They lead the table by 2pts. Today it's another important game, 2nd v 1st again, but this time, Lazio v Napoli. About 100 away fans are making the trip from Naples, and Lazio's coach and players also called for their fans' support.

Can we talk about this "Derby d'Italia" thing? At first I thought, "Oh good, it's a special match of Italy v San Marino!", but it turns out it's just what they call Juventus v Inter. :)

[IMG] [IMG] ...I guess it's kind of a derby, and I get why it was named that in the '60s when they were Italy's most successful men's teams. I even understand why men's football still uses the phrase, despite the Milan clubs' parity and Juve's dominance this century (they won the scudetto a dozen times and were champions of calciopoli) ... But in women's football none of those clubs are historically great. The top two title-winners are someone else. So, does anyone agree the women's Derby d'Italia should really be, er, let's check... FC Sassari Torres (Serie C) vs Lazio CF (Serie D)? Wouldn't it be more worthy of the name?

Anyway. That game is on today. Juve v Inter. (not my other Derby d'Italia)

    February review in Serie A

Juventus remain on top, effectively 6pts ahead and still undefeated. Surprisingly they dropped 2 points at FLorentia (5th), who continue their excellent home record.

Hellas Verona are sinking closer to the danger zone and they're in "relegation form" with only one point in seven games. Could the city lose 2 teams in 2 years?

Tavagnacco were deducted 1 point and 2 goals for failing to have an ambulance at a home game, a terrible mistake for any club, but this could be the difference between survival and relegation. Tavagnacco and Bari stepped up and both drew this week. Above the drop zone it's Verona 12pts and Bari 11, and still facing retrocessione are Tavagnacco 9pts and Orobica 1pt.

Sadly, the AC Milan v Fiorentina match was postponed because of a quarantine after the coronavirus deaths in the region. @blissett you mentioned it before, I really hope everything is okay.

Actually everything is indeed ok for most of the millions people living in Milan's metropolitan area (the actual number of person affected by the virus are a few hundreds, with a dozen fatalities).

The problem is the quarantine (everything closed: schools, theaters, museums, sport events, nightlife places), so life is quite boring and, especially, the economy is becoming more affected by the virus than actual people.

On Wednesday, three Coppa Italia quarter-final games were also postponed – Sassuolo v FLorentia, Juve v Empoli, and Fiorentina v AC Milan. Those are 2nd leg games. One match was played, ironically the one that didn't really need a return match to decide it: in Rome the final aggregate score, Roma 10, San Marino 1.
