If she is televised tomorrow over there, please try and let me know how she does.

  4. Sorry, I've no subscriptions on football channels. Most matches are on channels that require that.

    Secret training
In the early 1960s, the KNVB department in Alkmaar started a campaign for new youth referees, for which Ineke Boom, Klasina Laan and Nel Rentenaar signed up. They were admitted to the training, which was revolutionary for the time. Women weren't even allowed to play football back then. KNVB chairman Toon Schröder therefore pronounced a ban, but that was ignored by the football administrators in Alkmaar. Behind closed curtains, these three were secretly prepared for their first matches in youth football. On June 11, 1961, they made their debut during a tournament in Alkmaar, which generated enormous media attention. This was not only new in the Netherlands, but also in international football. Until then, no women were trained as football referees in the whole world, so this scoop was also noticed by foreign media.

There’s already a big winner ahead of the men’s 2026 FIFA World Cup match happening on Thursday between South Africa and the Czechia in Atlanta: Women.
Three women from the United States will referee the match, and make history as they do.
Tori Penso will be the first U.S. woman to be in charge of a men’s World Cup match when she serves as the head referee for the game.
Another big first? Her fellow woman ref Brooke Mayo, the assistant referee for the game, will be the first out LGBTQ+ official to preside over a men’s FIFA World Cup game.
Mayo has been outspoken about the role soccer played in her life as a queer girl growing up in Texas, and the way the sport provided an outlet to safely feel like herself despite the dominant cultural norms around her. She first began refereeing at the age of 13 — and continued to officiate matches even while playing soccer for Tennessee Tech University in college. In January, Mayo was named U.S. Soccer Female Referee of the Year.
Kathryn Nesbitt will serve as the third referee.
Thursday’s match will be the second time ever that an all-women trio of referees has been selected to oversee a men’s FIFA World Cup match. Penso, Mayo and Nesbitt have worked together before, officiating the final match of the 2023 women’s FIFA World Cup.

Scoop: for the first time, female referee whistles at World Cup match Orange, does not exactly keep cards in her pocket
The World Cup match of the Orange Squad against Tunisia is led by a female referee. The Mexican Katia Itzel García (33) has been designated for the last group game of the Orange. It is the first time that a woman referees a match of the Netherlands at the men's World Cup.

How is it being viewed/talked about in Netherlands? I'm asking as this doesn't really seem unique, particularly since there was the US crew for an entire match (your post above) and comes across to me as sensationalist.

  14. Just the mention of it being a first for the Orange Squad.
Not much of a talking point.
