John Wolyniec scored the equalizing goal for the a-team: Midfielder Kyle Beckerman lined up and cracked a 20-yard shot past US keeper Joe Cannon to give the U-23s a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. But in the 44th minute, the full national team made the most of a U-23 mistake at the back, with Kansas City midfielder Chris Klein putting MetroStar John Wolyniec through, where he slipped a shot under the arm of a sliding Doug Warren. _http://www.ussocceruk.com/news/?CatTypeId=2&ContentId=1244 GO WOLY!
From topdrawersoccer's account of the game ... Wolyniec hit Klein cutting inside and he put the shot away to tie the game. Did Woly score or get an assist? Who do you believe?
Just think about it - a year ago Woly was playing for an A-League team (I think he was still signed with the Milwaukee Rampage - he was definitly with them a year and a half ago). Now he is in the National Team Camp. Pretty cool to see a guy rise that quickly.
I think it's great that Arena is giving a lot of guys an opportunity at the National Team level who weren't even close to being in the picture a mere 6-12 months ago. Gives guys like Wolly something to strive for now that he's gotten a taste. While I don't see Wolly making the '06 World Cup squad, you never know when somebody like him will come in handy during qualifying or the Gold Cup.
I agree and it is good to see another player added to the National Team's depth. The more, the better.
First the national team then what? I think he's due for a transfer to Europe. All Wolyniec needs to do is make a tape with his goal against Columbus and sit back and watch the money role in.
Woly strikes again! Wolyniec played in the third of three 30 minute mini-games against the Under-23s. Some guy named Donovan apparently bumped him from his starting role. The following from Topdrawer Soccer There was one goal scored. Cunningham, about eight minutes in, took off on a dribble from near the mid-line, straight up the middle. When he came to Borchers and Marshall, he pushed the ball well between, sprinted through (with no professional foul coming in this friendly scrimmage) and rushed in on Cronin quite alone. Cronin made an excellent sliding block on the shot, but the rebound went to the trailing Wolyniec and he hit the empty goal easily.
Oh that was so great... The look on Busch's face was simply priceless. I hope Woly gets capped this weekend. The guy is a class act and even if he never gets another one what a great thing it would be for him.
