The Coach of the Danish national team, Morten Olsen, already was in the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday – officially to watch his national players (just Peter Madsen played 30 minutes). Indeed the 53 year old agreed with Wolfsburg on a cooperation and negotiated until the late Sunday evening with the Danish soccer association about terminating the contract in Copenhagen. Chances: 50-50. The fact that the ex-pro and coach of 1.FC Köln still has a binding contract until 2006, is probably the last problem on his way to VfL Wolfsburg.

Did Olsen accomplish absolutely anything of note with Cologne? I don't think so.

As player he was successful with Cologne, as coach rather not. Finished 10th and 11th in his two complete seasons 94 and 95. But he's well respected as coach and quite popular in Germany. And really, nothing against Wolfsburg, but personally I wouldn't give up the coaching position in Denmark - but this definitely is matter of the personality, some prefer the daily work with a team.

Olsen confirmed to stay in Denmark until 2006. "Fulfiling the contract is a matter of honor. Rumours like this one always come to exist when I appear in a stadium." Reality is probably rather that he wasn't allowed to go. The motivation for a contract with Wolfsburg seems to be quite clear: they offered 1.5 M salary, while he earns 400 K in Denmark.

After Christian Gross of FC Basel, Olsen is the second coach who turned down an offer from Wolfsburg. GM Peter Pander always announced to present a successor for Wolf until late February, which whill be difficult now.

    Wolfsburg needs to do something.
They are too close to the relegation zone for my liking.

Lame duck coach can't help either. Players fighting players.... everyone getting red cards....

"Crisis mode" is what my friend in Wolfsburg called it.

And we're back in the starting position: Olsen denied to have said the "honor sentence" to a Danish newspaper. Looks like he is still interested in signing with Wolfsburg.

As it seems, Wolfsburg still wants Olsen. Olsen can leave Denmark by using an option. Indeed he'd earn about 3.5 times more than now, but Olsen is not sure whether Wolfsburg is the right team. Some of his friends said that a more respected club would have gotten his signature without any doubt. This exactly is the problem Wolfsburg seems to have had with other coaches as well - big wallet, big claims, but the coaches shy away from the name Wolfsburg.

IMO not really clever. In Wolfsburg a coach is having excellent conditions. Volkswagen-money, a new stadium, a decent team and best of all for a new coach: the team sucked in the last years and absolutely was under their possibilities - basically a new coach can do nothing wrong as long as he doesn't relegate.

Agreed with what Olaf says. The Wolfsburg job is a diamond in the rough type of job. Think Leverkusen Part II.
