Lots of speculation just testing public opinion, also adding in one bit of speculation on the Metro boards - DC drafts Esky and trades him for Clint straight up. Then allowing the Metros to afford Wolff.

Most if not all the speculation on the MetroTard board is fueled by Blatz beer and the occassional crack rock.

I think you're giving them far too much credit. This is the MetroTard board we're talking about.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't mind doing that deal. I just don't put any stock in it.

Unless, of course, you believe Soccer America's current superdraft poll, which has Freddy Adu listed as one of the choices for forward in the draft...http://www.socceramerica.com/poll/december2002Poll.asp

That is what worries me...I don't take any logic for granted anymore. It already seems like Ray is hinting at a trade.

That quote scares the ************ out of me.

that quote scares me too. Imagine a front line of Stoichkov and Mathis..........and St. Elizabeth's just a stone's throw away from the stadium!! So that's the plan!

If we pick Eskandarian and then trade him, I fear there will be a huge backlash from the Armenian contingent of DCU supporters....

(I think there's at least two of us...but we're mean drunks....)

Stoichkov starting? Whatever happened to Tino?
Hmmm. Tino and Clinthino up top doesn't sound too bad to me.

What is so good about Eskandrian that Clint Mathis would be an even trade????? Please inform me.

    Re: Re: No poll necessary

Look that poll has nothing but speculation written on it. Most of those underclassmen haven't declared for the MLS draft, and most will not declare. Frankly, most of those guys will not make MLS rosters. That poll was likely thrown together by a group of people speculating on all the "possibilities" of players who might be in the draft, with zero knowledge of who would actually be in the draft except the seniors.

Why would the Armenians be upset? His direct ancestry (i.e. father) is Iranian.

Eskandarian for Mathis? Bradley isn't dumb...he knows the salary cap doesn't apply in Jersey, so he can keep the Clint, get Wolff, and do whatever the hell else he wants.

I'm sure everyone knows where I stand on this issue by now, since I've beaten it into the ground.

With a name like Eskandarian, he's gotta have Armenian heritage. (Armenian surnames characteristically end in "ian" or "yan")

He also mentions his Armenian heritage in the NY Times article mentioned in another thread here.

Andranik Eskandarian was born from Armenian parents, and began his career in Tadj of Iran's first division where they lived. He had 35 caps for Iran's National Team to include their world cup games in Argentina in 1978. I watched him since he joined the Cosmos in 1978, signed just after the Cosmos played the World All Stars (of which Andranik was a member). He was the Cosmos greatest fullback, regarded by many in the league as the fastest and toughest. Ray Hudson would have loved this guy.
Having watched him game in and game out, I will find it thrilling to watch his son do the same for us.

Kill me now. Are we forgetting about a certain back-liner named Carlos Alberto?

Eskandarian (the Elder) was fast, to be sure, but his greatest talent was knowing just how hard to foul his opponent (while rushing back to cover him) and not quite get a yellow card.

Others over Eskandarian: Pino Wilson, Bobby Smith, Robert Iarusci, and my personal fave, Werner Roth.

Eskandarian (the Elder) ranks around the same level as Mike Dillon.

Carlos was great for sure (especially when it came to shootout time). However, (correct me if I'm wrong) I don't believe all those players you mentioned even add up to the amount of years that Eskandarian played for the Cosmos. He rarely missed a game, and used his body with reckless abandonment. I call that continuity and consistancy which anchored the D for a very long time.

I stand corrected Gunnersauras (in order):

    Roth Werner D 1972-79
    Eskandarian Andranik (Eski) D 1979-84
    Alberto Carlos D 1977-80, 82
    Iarusci Robert D 1977-78, 81-83
    Smith Bob D 1976-79

A good article from 2001 on Eski. He talks about his boy a bit:

To me, the Cosmos were the original scum. The MenstrualStars are Scum lite.

That SA article has it right - "steady." I'd go farther than "steady" into the "very good" category, but certainly not "the greatest."

As for Beckenbauer, uh, that would be midfield.

And the original scum was the Tampa Bay Rowdies. But that's the stuff of another thread.

So, getting back on topic - the first time I saw a photo of Alecko, my reaction was much like the first time I saw Jeordi Cruyff - "That acord didn't fall far from the tree!" I think the kid's the real deal, and I hope we get him.
