with Freddy Adu in the picture alot of folks think it will be easier to win the world cup,so if Adu becomes as great as Pele, how easy does one think he will lift the world cup ?my Feeling is that it's still a longshot, Maradona almost never won it,Cruyff,Zico,Socrates,Eusebio,Puskas(even changed Countries, most prolific international goal scorer ever)Platini ,Rummenigge,Uwe seeler and Boniek all never won it.But Maradona after having a splendid world cup in the finals against west germany he had to rely on his team mates as he was mostly marked out of the game and his biggest contribution in that finals game was the final ball that released Burruchaga to score the third goal. this game in itself just highlights how difficult it is to win a world cup finals considering maradona also had some outstanding team mates like Pumpido, ruggeri,Batista, Valdano to name a few. Even Brazil with the so called team of dreams with zico and Socrates in 86 and 82 never made it to the semis.
lets not forget george weah and the indominable lions of cameroon. that guy was born in the wrong country.
No one player can win a world cup. First, we have no idea how good Adu will become.I think the chances are good he will be a good pro, but it is not possible to know that he will become a Pele. I think a real optimism can come from the fact that we have a lot of good young players, not just Freddy. This may not be a popular view, but I would guess the USA will not win a World Cup until MLS has become a league of 20 teams with far more money and far more following than it has now- say in 20 years.Of course with good luck and great goalkeeping, we could get lucky before. But it will still take 20 years until our team is as good as Brazil and France or Italy.
I think you are assuming too much of what people think of Freddie. We know there are 11 players on the field at one time, plus subs, and a coach.
It's probably unfair on the other poor teams that compete in the World Cup to actually play anyone else alongside Freddy. After all, the kid is guaranteed to be better than Pele, so it's really only a matter of fair play to let him take on the world on his own. Good to see that he's not being ridiculously over-hyped though.
We're jumping the gun here with this "Will Adu ever win the World Cup talk?" We might as well be asking "Will Tim Howard ever win a World cup?" At least Tim is performing on the biggest stage successfully. Let's see if Adu can actually beat MLS defenders first. I agree one player can't lift the cup by himself, though. We may actually have to develop midfielders and defenders if we want it in the next 20 years. At least the goalkeeping is solid, and our strikers are above mediocre.
Absolutely he was born in the wrong country - especially as that country was Liberia. Roger Milla was the Cameroon player you may have been thinking of - either that or you are crap at Geography
